hi you probably get this ask all the time but i'd love some recs with a wallflower heroine that isn't romancing mr bridgerton or devil in winter (the GOAT). thank you!!!
Sure! I don't think I get this as much as you might think lol.
Sarah MacLean writes a few good Wallflowers!
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake--Kinda classic, the heroine is a wallflower who realizes she's going on the shelf and decides to ball out and have fun beforehand. She runs into a very slutty rake and makes an agreement with him that leads to her experiencing~ the world (also... dick).
A Rogue by Any Other Name--My favorite MacLean, the heroine has gone on the shelf because her fiance ditched her years ago. She ends up in a forced marriage with her childhood best friend because he's back after losing everything and recovering what he lost means marrying her... whether she wants it or not.
And more...
Dearest Rogue by Elizabeth Hoyt--The heroine is actually blind, which has led to her domineering older brother to overprotect her and shelter her from society. Then a kidnapper attempts to steal her, which leads to her going on an adventure with her hot, older bodyguard (impetuous dry humping ensues).
The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden--A plain, bespectacled heroine who feels overshadowed by her sisters ends up married to a frosty straitlaced duke after his brother compromises her (not in a sexual way). Naturally, he's obsessed with her and brings her out of her shell.
How to Steal a Scoundrel's Heart by Vivienne Lorret--The ironic thing about this is that the heroine was a wallflower type until she ended up having her reputation ruined, which deemed her scandalous. Which is why she ends up taking a rake up on his offer to make her his official mistress for four months (no more and no less). A great romance in which the HORRIBLE BAD BOY ends up melting for this woman.
A Rake's Guide to Seduction by Caroline Linden--A different take on a wallflower, wherein the heroine was vivacious until she married a shithead. He's dead now and she's depressed, but when she goes to a house party she reconnects with her brothers' rakish, scandalous friend (who had a thing for her and almost offered for her before she got engaged). He brings her back to life.
Stacy Reid's Sinful Wallflowers series, as the title suggests, focuses on a group of wallflower friends. Suffice to say, the shit they get up to is a bit... racier... than what the Kleypas Wallflowers do. They're all good, but my favorite is My Darling Duke, in which the heroine pretends that she's engaged to this reclusive duke no one has seen in years (which turns out to be because an accident left him disabled and using a wheelchair often, something he emotionally struggles with) only for him to come out of hiding and be like "YOU RANG?"
A Week to Be Wicked by Tessa Dare--The heroine is a nerd who doesn't really want to be Seen, and ends up on a roadtrip romance to this Fossil Event with a rakish hero who, among other things, teaches her what sex is by humping her through a sheet until they both come. It's gREAT. Tessa writes a good few wallflowers--I'd also recommend When a Scot Ties the Knot on this level.
The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe is a Gilded Age wallflower book. The heroine is very shy, but she wants to be able to seduce a man--so naturally, she makes a deal with the local slutty rake to get seduction lessons. As you do.

Mister Soul Of Jamaica … and Thamesmead : 1938-2008 : reggae artist Alton Ellis
The first record played on the first week’s show of the first reggae music programme on British radio was a single by Alton Ellis, a magnificent singer/songwriter too often overlooked when reggae legends are named. I immediately fell in love with his soulful voice, his perfect pitch and his beautifully clear enunciation, rushing out to buy ‘La La Means I Love You’ [Nu Beat NB014], unaware it was recorded two years earlier. Like many of Ellis’ recordings, this was a cover version of an American soul hit (despite the label’s songwriter credit), though Ellis distinguished himself from contemporaries by also writing his own ‘message’ songs with striking lyrics and memorable hooks. My next single purchases were noteworthy Ellis originals:
‘Lord Deliver Us’ [Gas 161] included an unusual staccato repeated bridge and lines that demonstrated Ellis’ humanitarian pre-occupations, including “Let the naked be clothed, let the blind be led, let the hungry be fed” and “Children, go on to school! Be smarter than your fathers, don’t be a fool!” Its wonderful B-side instrumental starts with a shouted declaration “Well, I am the originator, so you’ve come to copy my tune?” that predates similar statements on many DJ records.
‘Sunday’s Coming’ [Banana BA318] has imaginative chord progressions, a huge choir on its chorus and lyrics “Better get your rice’n’peas, better get your fresh fresh beans’’ that locate it firmly as a Jamaican original rather than an American cover version. Why does it last a mere two minutes thirty seconds? The B-side’s saxophone version demonstrates how ethereal the rhythm track is and shows off the dominant rhythm guitar riff beautifully. It’s a masterclass in music production.
It was only after Ellis had emigrated to Britain in 1973 that a virtual ‘greatest hits’ album of his classic singles produced by Duke Reid was finally released the following year, entitled ‘Mr Soul Of Jamaica’ [Treasure Isle 013]. I recall buying this import LP in Daddy Peckings’ newly opened reggae record shop at 142 Askew Road and loved every track on one of reggae’s most consistently high-quality albums (akin to Marley’s ‘Legend’). It bookended Ellis’ most creative studio partnership in Jamaica when Reid had to retire through ill health.
What was it that made Ellis’ recordings so significant? Primarily, as the album title confirms, it was that his voice uniquely sounded more ‘soul’ than ‘reggae’, occupying the same territory as Jamaica’s ‘Sam & Dave’-like duo ‘The Blues Busters’. I have always harboured the sentiment that, if he had been able to record in America during the 1960’s, Ellis could have been a hugely popular soul singer there. Maybe label owner Duke Reid shared this thought, having recorded ‘soul’ versions of some of Ellis’ biggest songs for inclusion in a 1968 compilation album ‘Soul Music For Sale’ [Treasure Isle LP101/5]. However, at the time, reggae was a completely unknown genre in mainstream America, so Reid’s soul recordings remained unknown there. [The sadly deleted 2003 compilation ‘Work Your Soul’ [Trojan TJDCD069] collected some fascinating soul versions by Reid and other producers.]
Secondly, Ellis’ superb Duke Reid recordings were backed by Treasure Isle studio house band ‘Tommy McCook & the Supersonics’ whose multitude of recordings during the ska, rocksteady and reggae eras on their own and backing so many singers/groups demonstrated a tightness and professionalism that is breathtaking. Using only basic equipment in the studio above Reid’s Bond Street liquor store, engineer Errol Brown produced phenomenal results for the time, operating a ‘quality control’ that belied the release of dozens of recordings every month.
Finally, Ellis’ recordings displayed a microphone technique that was unique in reggae and demonstrated his astute knowledge of studio production techniques. At the end of lines, he would sometimes turn his head away from the microphone whilst singing a note. Because Jamaican studios were not built acoustically ‘dead’, Ellis’ head movement not only translated into his voice trailing off into the distance (like a train pulling away) but also allowed the listener to hear his voice bouncing off the studio walls. ‘Reverberation’ equipment to create this effect technically was used minimally in studios until the 1970’s ‘dub’ era, so Ellis seemed to have improvised manually. Perhaps he had heard this effect on American soul records of the time?
On one of his biggest songs from 1969, ‘Breaking Up Is Hard To Do’ [Treasure Isle 220], you can hear Ellis use this effect during the chorus when he sings the words “everybody knows”, particularly just prior to the fade-out. It is similarly evident on Ellis’ vocal contribution to the brilliant DJ version of the same song, ‘Melinda’ by I-Roy [on album Trojan TRLS63] recorded in 1972.
The same vocal technique is audible on other songs including ‘Girl I’ve Got A Date’ [Treasure Isle DSR1691] in which Ellis elongates the word “tree” into “treeeeee”, as well as “breeze” into “breeeeeeze”, whilst moving his head away from the microphone.
youtube
I had always been intrigued by Ellis’ recording technique but had not thought anything more of it until, entirely by accident half a century later, I found startling 1960’s footage recorded at the Sombrero Club on Molynes Road up from Half Way Tree, Jamaica. Backed by Byron Lee’s Dragonaires, an uncredited vocal group I presume to be ‘The Blues Busters’ performed their 1964 recording “I Don’t Know” [Island album ILP923] during which one of the duo (Lloyd Campbell or Phillip James) moves his head away from the microphone at the end of lines, similar to what can be heard on Ellis’ recordings.
This started me searching for 1960’s footage of Ellis performing live. Sadly, I found nothing (either solo or in his previous duo with Eddie Parkins as ‘Alton & Eddy’ [sic], similar to ‘The Blues Busters’) to see if he emulated this vocal technique on stage too. For me, it remains amazing that the smallest characteristics audible in a studio recording (particularly from analogue times) can offer so much insight into the ad hoc techniques adopted to overcome the limitations of available technology. The ingenuity of music production in Jamaica during this period was truly remarkable.
Prior to emigration, Ellis had toured Britain in 1967, performing with singer Ken Boothe. Whilst in London, he recorded a single ‘The Message’ [Pama PM707] in which he raps freestyle rather than sings, fifteen years prior to Grandmaster Flash’s hit rap track of the same name, and declares truthfully “I’m the rocksteady king, sir”. Its B-side pokes fun at 'English Talk' that he must have heard during his visit. The backing music is the clunky Brit reggae of the time, but Ellis’ subject matter is fascinating for its innovation.
1971’s ‘Arise Black Man’ [Aquarius JA single] includes the lyric “From Kingston to Montego, black brothers and sisters, arise black man, take a little step, show them that you can, ‘coz you’ve got the right to show it, you’ve got the right to know it”. The verses and chorus “We don’t need no evidence now” are backed by a big choir. It’s a phenomenal tune despite not even having received a UK release at the time. (Was the chorus a reference to Britain's 1971 Immigration Act in which a Commonwealth applicant was "required to present [...] forms of evidence" to "prove that they have the right of abode" in the UK?)
The same year, ‘Back To Africa’ [Gas GAS164] has the chorus “Goin’ to back to Africa, ‘coz I’m black, goin’ back to Africa, and it’s a fact’ backed by a choir once again. There’s an adlibbed interjection “Gonna stay there, 1999, I gotta get there” that predates Hugh Mundell’s seminal song ‘Africans Must Be Free By 1983’.
Again in 1971, Ellis re-recorded his song ‘Black Man’s Pride’ [Bullet BU466], previously made for producer Coxson Dodd [Coxson JA single], with it’s shocking (at the time) chorus “I was born a loser, because I’m a black man”. The verses are a history lesson in slavery: “We have suffered our whole lives through, doing things that they’re supposed to do, we were beaten ‘til our backs were black and blue” and “I was living in my own land, I was moved because of white men’s plans, now I’m living in a white man’s land”. I consider this phenomenal song the direct antecedent of similarly themed, outspoken recordings by Joe Higgs (‘More Slavery’ [Grounation GROL2021]) and Burning Spear (“Slavery Days” [Fox JA pre]) in 1975. If only this Ellis song was as well-known as Winston Rodney’s! [In initial recorded versions, “loser” was replaced by “winner” and the song retitled ‘Born A Winner’.]
I first discovered Ellis’ song ‘Good Good Loving’ [FAB 165] as the vocal produced by Prince Buster for a DJ track by teenager Little Youth on the 1972 compilation album ‘Chi Chi Run’ [FAB MS8, apologies for the language] called ‘Youth Rock’. At the time, I was crazy about this recording, combining a high-pitched youthful talkover with a solid rhythm and Ellis’ trademark voice in the mix. I will be forever mystified as to why the DJ (sounding like Hugh Mundell/Jah Levi) seems to refer to “Cool Version by The Gallows [sic]” in his lyrics!
In 1973, Ellis released the song I never tire of hearing, ‘Truly’ [Pyramid PYR7003], that benefits from such a laid-back rhythm that it feels it could come to an abrupt stop at times. It is one of Ellis’ simplest but most effective songs and has become a staple of reggae ‘lovers’ singers since, employing wonderfully unanticipated chord changes. It sounds like a self-production, even though UK sound system man Lloyd Coxsone’s name is on the label. This should have been a huge hit record!
There are so many more Ellis tracks from this fertile early 1970’s period that make interesting listening, recorded for many different producers and released on different labels. Sadly, no CD or digital compilation has managed to embrace them all. I still live in hope.
After Ellis moved permanently to Britain during his late thirties, he must have struggled in the same way as some of his contemporaries, trying to sustain their careers in the ‘motherland’. Despite UK chart successes, Desmond Dekker, Nicky Thomas, Bob Andy and Jimmy Cliff were very much viewed as one-off ‘novelty’ hitmakers by the mainstream media rather than developing artists. Worse, Ellis had never touched the British charts. Neither did the majority of reggae tracks produced then in British studios sound particularly ‘authentic’ to the music’s audience, let alone the wider ‘pop’ market. Ellis performed at the many reggae clubs around Britain but the rewards must have been limited.
Ellis’ British commercial success came unexpectedly when another ‘novelty’ reggae single shot to number one in the UK charts in 1977. Its story is complicated! The previous year, Ellis’ 1967 song ‘I’m Still In Love With You’ had been covered in Jamaica by singer Marcia Aitken [Joe Gibbs JA pre]. A DJ version by Trinity over the identical rhythm followed called ‘Three Piece Suit’ [Belmont JA pre]. Then two young girls, Althia & Donna, recorded their debut as an ‘answer’ record to Trinity on the same rhythm and named it ‘Uptown Top Ranking’ [Joe Gibbs JA pre]. Other producers released their own ‘answer’ records, rerecording the identical rhythm, all of which could be heard one after the other blaring from minibuses’ sound systems in Jamaica at the time. Unfortunately for Ellis, Jamaica had no songwriting royalty payment system in those days.
I remember first hearing ‘Uptown Top Ranking’ as an import single on John Peel’s ‘BBC Radio One’ evening show. Even once it had been given a UK release [Lightning LIG506], Ellis was still omitted from the songwriting credit by producer Gibbs. Legal action followed and eventually Ellis was rewarded with half of the record’s songwriting royalties (for the music but not the lyrics), a considerable sum for a UK number one hit then. The same track (re-recorded due to producer Joe Gibbs’ intransigence) was then included on an album that Althia & Donna made for Virgin Records the following year [Front Line FL1012] that had global distribution, earning Ellis additional royalties.
Also in 1977, Ellis produced twenty-year-old London singer Janet Kay’s first record, a version of hit soul ballad ‘Lovin’ You’, released on his ‘All Tone’ label [AT006] that, prior to emigration, he had created in Jamaica to release his own productions. Ellis’ soul sensibilities and music production experience inputted directly into the creation of what became known (accidentally) as ‘lovers rock’, a uniquely British sub-genre that perfectly blended soul and reggae into love songs recorded mostly by teenage girls. This ‘underground’ music went on to dominate British reggae clubs and pirate radio stations for the next decade, even pushing Kay’s ‘Silly Games’ [Arawak ARK DD 003] to number two in the UK pop singles chart two years later.
Into the 1980’s and 1990’s, Ellis continued to release more UK productions on his label, including a ‘25th Silver Jubilee’ album [All Tone ALT001] in 1984 that revisited nineteen of his biggest hits, celebrating a career that had started in Jamaica as half of the duo in 1959. I recall Ellis visiting ‘Radio Thamesmead’ in 1986, the community cable station where I was employed at the time. He was living on London’s Thamesmead council estate and was interviewed about his label’s latest releases.
On 10 October 2008 at the age of seventy, Ellis died of cancer in Hammersmith Hospital. He had been awarded the Order of Distinction by the Jamaica government in 1994 for his contributions to the island’s music industry. I continue to derive a huge amount of satisfaction from listening to his many recordings dating back to the beginning of the 1960’s and wish he was acknowledged more widely for his outstanding contributions to reggae music.
Now, when I think of Alton Ellis, I fondly recall my daily car commute into work at KISS FM radio, Holloway Road in 1990/1991 with colleague Debbi McNally, us both singing along at the top of our voices to my homemade cassette compilation playing Alton Ellis’ beautiful 1968 rocksteady version of Chuck Jackson’s 1961 song ‘Willow Tree’ [Treasure Isle TI7044].
“Cry not for me, my willow tree … ‘coz I have found the love I’ve searched for.”
[I have curated an Alton Ellis playlist on Spotify though many significant recordings are unavailable.]

AMERICAN PIE- 1999 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jim and his best friends make a pact to lose their virginity before prom. Also Jim fucks a pie.
Excellent teen comedy. Highly rewatchable and still funny 25 years later. Insanely stacked cast with some of my favourites like Alyson Hannigan, Tara Reid and Seann William Scott. Great soundtrack, Mutt by Blink 182 and Following a Star by Duke Daniels are sweet. Overall amazing 90's vibes and just a really fun watch. Kevins a total douchebag and Finch is humiliating but they all work as a group. The friendship element of the Pie movies is done really well i feel. Mira Sorvino> Mena Suvari.
One of my favorite movies.

Chicago Bears Breakdown With Greg Gabriel

With the 2024 NFL draft now in the rearview reflect, our center has previously begun to go to the 2025 possibilities. The following year's class hopes to have another interesting quarterback bunch, and the protective side of the ball makes certain to bounce back in the wake of being eclipsed by the offense last end of the week. Who are the top possibilities from know's point of view? How does the class of 2025 stack up against the group of 2024? We asked NFL draft experts Matt Mill operator and Field Yates, alongside school football correspondent Adam Rittenberg, to respond to seven unavoidable issues about the impending draft class. The 2025 draft in Green Narrows, Wisconsin, is one year away, so there's still a long way to go about the class. However, until further notice, we should do a fast prologue to what could be a champion gathering of possibilities. Furthermore, for more on what's in store from the 2025 class, look at Jordan Reid's too soon mock draft of Cycle 1.
Who are the top quarterbacks in the 2025 class?
Matt Mill operator, NFL draft expert: The beginning of the 2025 class' assessment is a three-headed beast. Carson Beck (Georgia) is the hot name among NFL scouts, however he'll be tested by Quinn Ewers (Texas) and Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) in the event that those two can make the following stride in their games in the 2024 season. In addition to his impressive command of the Georgia offense, Beck exemplifies the soft touch and driving arm strength that NFL teams adore. He tossed for 3,941 yards and 24 scores to only six captures last season. His absence of portability may be addressed, yet his pocket development is brilliant. One more player to watch out for is Riley Leonard, presently at Notre Woman subsequent to moving from Duke. Scouts love his real potential, yet he really wants an enormous leap underway and consistency. Nonetheless, we've witnessed that before as a quarterback acquires insight in school. Field Yates, NFL draft investigator: The three who stand out based off 2023 film study are Sanders, Beck and Ewers - - in a specific order for me. I really think Sanders feels like the early pioneer to be the principal pick in the draft, as his world class pocket passing is past noteworthy. In his most memorable season at Colorado, Sanders finished 298 passes for 3,230 yards and 27 scores. How he can cut up a guard when given existence is genuine. Adam Rittenberg, public school football columnist: The 2025 quarterback class does not look like the one before it, but Miami's Cameron Ward, Sanders, Beck, and Ewers all have potential for the first round, especially after the run on quarterbacks in Detroit. Beck and Ewers will enter the season as top Heisman Prize up-and-comers. Sanders is looking for better assurance and more equilibrium on offense yet showed downfield accuracy and a lot of durability in 2023. Before withdrawing from the 2024 NFL draft and transferring to Miami, where he will lead a talented offense that includes running back Damien Martinez, an additional intriguing prospect, Ward briefly entered the draft. Ward is falling off serious areas of strength for a season, where he tossed for 3,735 yards and 25 touchdowns.____________________________
Which possibilities could turn out to be the top non-QB in the class?
Miller: We should take a gander at next season's hostile tackle class since it's a decent one. Kelvin Banks Jr., a 6-foot-4, 324-pound left tackle from Texas, will compete with Will Campbell, a 6-foot-6, 325-pound blindside protector from LSU, for the top tackle position. Both players are excellent movers who possess the length and strength necessary to be elite NFL players. The class is additionally skilled on safeguard, yet the two hostile handles would feature my initial board. Yates: Colorado WR/DB Travis Tracker and Tennessee edge rusher James Pearce Jr. are the two names that strike a chord right away, as each pops such a huge amount on film. Tracker carries uncommon ease and ability to two separate positions, showing easy speed and senses. Last season, he caught 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns as a receiver; on edge of the ball, he caught three capture attempts and had seven pass separations. Pearce, who had a breakout season in 2023 with 10 sacks in his true sophomore season, appears to be the next elite pass-rusher to enter the NFL. He has such great first-step explosion. Rittenberg: When Michigan won the national championship in 2024, it was expected to have more high-level draft picks in 2025. Cautious back Will Johnson and protective lineman Bricklayer Graham both ought to hear their names called right off the bat in Green Narrows. Johnson, the No. 23 enlist in the 2021 ESPN 300, has extraordinary length at 6-2 and playmaking abilities with four captures last season. Graham was certainly not a beautified secondary school player - - he at first dedicated to Boise State before Michigan - - however turned into a rebuffing force in the inside of the country's best line the previous fall. He ought to keep on ascending on draft sheets.
Who are some early draft sleeper picks who could rise this prepare?
Miller: Kentucky guarded tackle Deone Walker is one of my most loved early watches in anticipation of the 2024 school football season. Watching his 2023 tape, I get a Derrick Earthy colored vibe from the 6-6, 348-pounder. Walker posted 7.5 sacks last season, so he's a nose tackle as well as somebody who really influences the game on three downs. He gets an opportunity to shoot up sheets in the event that he expands on his breakout 2023 season. I likewise need to yell out Texas' new expansion from the exchange entryway, guarded end Three pointer Moore. He posted 14 sacks last season at UTSA. The 6-3, 235-pounder could be a problem for SEC offenses due to his exceptional first-step speed. Yates: Germie Bernard, a receiver for Alabama, has transferred from Washington, where he was the fourth wide receiver in the nation's best receiver room. He was a star at Alabama's spring game - - he had three gets for 122 getting yards - - and ought to be vigorously included. In the interim, Georgia will by and by have a star tight finish to work with, as Ben Yurosek will make a big appearance this fall for the Bulldogs after three seasons at Stanford. Yurosek had 42 gets in 2021 and found the middle value of north of 15 yards for every catch. His 2023 season was cut short by a shoulder injury, but he still impressed in Stanford's season-opening game against Hawaii with nine receptions for 138 yards.
What to be aware from the 2024 NFL draft
Rittenberg: A threesome of pass-rushers - Texas A&M's Nic Scourton, Louisville's Ashton Gillotte and LSU's Harold Perkins Jr. - - ought to join the excess of protective possibilities. Scourton drove the Enormous Ten with 10 sacks the previous fall and ought to coordinate well with Cashius Howell and others to pressure quarterbacks. In his first three seasons at Louisville, the 6-3, 270-pound Gillotte has recorded 22 sacks and can play both the edge and interior line. Perkins has 13 sacks and 26 handles for misfortune in his initial two seasons and ought to flourish under new organizer Blake Dough puncher.
What is the early strength of the class?
Miller: Defense! As incredible as the 2024 draft class was on offense, with a record 23 first-round determinations coming from that side of the ball, the 2025 class will be featured by safeguard. Cornerbacks Will Johnson, Travis Tracker and Benjamin Morrison (Notre Woman) all seem to be future top-10 picks. The guarded line is similarly stacked with Pearce, Graham, Perkins and Mykel Williams (Georgia) all demonstrating the possibility to be geniuses at a higher level.
How does the class of 2025 stack up in comparison to the group of 2024?
Yates: When comparing the classes, I find the expected overall depth in 2025 to be the most intriguing aspect. There were such countless players who ended up getting back to school this previous draft, which is attached to both Nothing amazing open doors and the way that all NCAA competitors who were in school toward the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic were conceded an additional time of qualification. Genuine green beans who entered school in 2020 or the people who entered in 2021 and played immediately are set out toward their last year this season, which ought to prompt a lot further class. totally normal and not convoluted necessary background information
in about 2016-17 we were preparing for a new franchise to enter the NHL; that is, vegas was getting a team, where no team previously existed. that meant the Knights existed as like, a concept, before they played any games OR, importantly, had any actual players under contract
most of their roster would be formed at an event called the expansion draft. before then, they could sign players, but only ones who weren't yet associated with any other NHL team. this meant they didn't sign many players before the expansion draft.
after they signed their first player, and proceeded to. not sign any more for a while. there was a lot of joking about the One Knight
it is a pretty ubiquitous hockey tradition for, pre-game, players to get together in a group and kick a ball around to collectively keep it in the air as long as possible. this is frequently documented for social media these days, e.g. you'll see clips of players doing this on snap chat or insta stories or whatever
the Knights social media decided to poke fun at themselves by producing a video of their One guy acting like he was abt to start a game. and kicking the ball in the air and it dribbles sadly away as no one is there to catch it
i found this very funny
on tumblr at the time people frequently made powerpoint presentation style posts to convince people to check out the things they're a fan of. usually they are not very serious
hockeyblr specifically would do this to be like "heres why you should cheer for [my team]." hockeyblr powerpoints tended to mostly consist of humourously profiling the Big Name players on said team
it occurred to me that it would be really funny to do one of those for a team that only had One Player to profile
i double checked his name immediately before opening photoshop
i proceeded to make the duke reid powerpoint
i posted the duke reid powerpoint
everything happened.
if someone ever asks me what's the funniest thing i've ever done my mind is always gonna go to when i made the duke reid powerpoint, however the humour of that is not something that anyone is gonna understand unless they're familiar with a highly specific moment in hockey tumblr culture in 2017

also now that rwarb was such a successful adaptation, which queer romances would you like to see them tackle next?
Weeeeelll if there were zero budgetary and casting restrictions in place, if I could just wave a magic wand and make great adaptations--
Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid--SEEMS like one of the easiest options, comes built in with a sequel, and it's like. Along the same lines as RWARB, while being.... a lot more sexual and a good bit angstier because the stakes are arguably HIGHER (mostly I'm thinking of Ilya being a world-famous Russian athlete who's also like. Bi.). I feel like it's funny and swooningly romantic in a manner similar to RWARB, but it's the next level up in a sense re: maturity. I also think, again, they could actually do this... albeit with a lot of obstacles re: both sexual content and like, casting dudes who could be fake hockey players lol. And one of them has to either be Russian or miraculously do a bang-up Russian accent. Both of these things are challenges.
The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian--would be SUCH a good mini? A historical romcom with the soft bisexual former highwayman and the flashiest motherfucker who's ever walked into the tavern or whatever like "HELP ME ROB MY DAD... and I will consider letting you look at my ankles". And then he SWORDFIGHTS LMAO? Perfect perfect perfect. then you could have the Marian book as a sequel.
Something Fabulous/Something Spectacular by Alexis Hall--you begin with a mini on the ultimate m/m romcom roadtrip romance, then you transition to the equally funny but also deeply emotionally stirring book about two nonbinary characters falling in love? and one of them is BASICALLY a rockstar?
A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger--the sapphic Interview with the Vampire, incredibly good and wry and dark and funny and ROMANTIC
A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall--would be an amazing sweeping four part period drama; I just love the premise so much, with the heroine transitioning by faking her death at Waterloo and her best friend never emotionally getting over it and then meeting her again after her transition and not recognizing her until he realizes she has THE SAME FRECKLES??? JESUS. A full-stop ROMANCE romance.
The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles--JOSS DOOMSDAY and his gay exploits in the marsh! Blackmailing his old hookup to continue his smuggling operation and then following that old hookup home and going "so like... you down to fuck or....?"
This is completely impossible but I'm gonna pie in the sky and say Tiffany Reisz's Original Sinners would make the most demented borderline-impossible explicit TV series ever. Imagine the ongoing antics of a bisexual dominatrix, her ex-boyfriend except actually not except the love of her life who is a Catholic priest that gets sexual pleasure out of inflicting pain, a totally straight man (according to himself) who has nonetheless been in a 20+year off/on thing with a bisexual French guy who runs the kink underworld of New York City or something. And they all fuck together sometimes. Like at Christmas. Complete with a snowball moment! Because Christmas!
New Camelot Trilogy--will never happen, but in my wiiiiiiildest dreeeeeeams this would be like, a 10-episode miniseries (or more??? Like a full outlander-style 13 episode series..... or a three season deal with 8 episodes per season...). It's just one of my favorite romance series of all time, it does such a good job of melting from the simple love triangle to this complex menage a trois of possessive wounded messy people? And somehow two of them are the president and the vice president lmao??? Of course, in the same sense... I'd love a Thornchapel miniseries. Like, you'd get a m/m/f throuple, a f/f couple, and this one bi priest guy they all fuck with at points? But nobody wants me to have the Gothic polyamorous friend group romance I want.

☆。*。☆。
It was a rough start to a Wednesday morning for a particular FBI agent. She almost twisted her ankle on her early morning jog, got stuck in traffic, and had to wait in a long line for her co-workers’ coffee orders. Soon enough, she started to wish that she took the metro instead. Media communications liaison Jennifer “JJ” Jareau woke up today and chose violence. She huffed in frustration at how her morning went.
Walking toward the bullpen with the coffee orders in her hands, JJ was greeted with “hellos” and “good mornings”. Not wanting to have her co-workers profile her, JJ bottled up her frustration and grumpiness and put a smile on her face. It was a rule amongst the group to never profile each other. With learning an assortment of profiling tactics, JJ knew how to form a realistic smile without genuine happiness. Creases around the eyes, smile lines contoured the mouth, sparkles in her baby blue eyes. The short blonde perfected the fake smile that could fool anyone, even expert profilers.
“Good morning, guys.” JJ said with a bright smile on her face. She held two cardboard trays filled with various coffee orders. She placed one of the trays on Emily’s desk, so she can pass out the orders to her co-workers. She called out the order name as she passed the cup to the person.
“One French vanilla latte for Ms. Garcia. Two black coffees for Emily and Derek. And finally, a coffee with extra cream and sugar for Spence.” Everyone said their thank you’s to the blonde. Then, there was one coffee cup left. A cappuccino.
“Happy Wednesday, my nerds.” Rossi said as he approached the group of tired agents. JJ smiled and handed the cappuccino to the elderly man.
“Grazie.” He thanked the media liaison for her efforts to bring his favorite morning beverage. The group spent some time chatting nonsense before the case briefing. Thirty minutes went by and all of them disbursed into their desks to finish up the paperwork. JJ headed down to her office to work on choosing the next case after the one that was currently ongoing.
After settling in her office chair, JJ took a look around her office. Messy stacks of pending files scattered her desk. Empty coffee cups and water bottles lined the file cabinet. JJ checked the time on her watch. 8:12 AM. About two hours to kill. The blonde put her hair up into a ponytail and took in a deep breath. She dove into the nearest pile of manila files, looking through all the documents and photographs to determine which case for the BAU team to take on after the current case.
As the clock ticked closer to 10 AM, JJ picked up today’s case files and head out of her office. Strutting through the bullpen, JJ entered the briefing room slightly out of breath.
“Sorry I’m late, everyone,” JJ said while passing the manila folders out to her co-workers. After handing out the necessary materials, she grabbed the remote from the center of the wooden table.
“Sam Winchester was found in Fulton Park, in the Stuyvesant Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. Eighteen stab wounds to his chest and neck,” JJ explained as she clicked on the remote to switch between the crime scene photos. “He is one of the victims dumped at various locations of Brooklyn that was found last night.”
“Hold up. One of the victims?” Derek asked.
“Yeah. So far this killer built up a rep sheet of five kills.” JJ stated. Hotch raised one of his eyebrows at the new information.
“Seven? Why haven’t the NYPD notified us immediately after the first three kills?” Hotch asked the media liaison.
“Probably the department thought they could handle the crimes,” JJ explained. “That was the case until they realized that they needed help.”
The young blonde switched to the next slide, showing one of the other victims dumped in North Williamsburg.
“What’s interesting about the locations is that the first victim was drowned in the Hudson River. And as more victims appear, the disposal methods get more dramatic. Maybe it plays some role in the unsub’s pathology.” Spencer said as he looked at the screen, observing for any patterns.
“Like with one of the recent victims, the disposal site is in Cobble Hill. It’s typically occupied by those who are relatively wealthy.” Rossi said to continue Spencer’s thoughts. “This unsub is getting bolder with his disposal sites. I’m concerned with there being an end game to this.” Emily stated. Everyone at the round table shifted through the various crime scene photos and documents. Rossi took hold of one of the crime scene photographs: a reversed ten of cups tarot card. “It is also apparent that the unsub is leaving tarot cards at the scene of the crime.”
“Tarot cards? What’s the significance?” Derek asked.
“Maybe to tell of the inevitable fortune the victims faced?” Emily said.
“Well, each card has a different meaning when it is upright and reversed. And usually, when doing a reading, three to five cards are pulled to tell a fortune.” Penelope explained as she typed away on her work laptop. It had not surprised anyone that the technical analyst had an interest in tarot readings and astrology.
“You know, the first documented tarot packs were recorded between 1440 and 1450 AD in Milan, Ferrara, Florence, and Bologna when additional trump cards with allegorical illustrations were added to the common four-suit pack. These new decks were called carte da trionfi, triumph cards, and the additional cards are known simply as trionfi, which became "trumps" in English. The oldest surviving tarot cards are the 15 Visconti-Sforza tarot decks painted in the mid-15th century for the rulers of the Duchy of Milan. The Duke of Milan described a 60-card deck with 16 cards having images of the Roman gods and suits depicting four kinds of birds.” Spencer talked about the history of tarot cards, with hand gestures to accompany his little ramble. When he finished, everyone at the table stared at him. The young FBI agents sheepishly smiled as Emily poked his left cheek.
“Since when did you learn about tarot cards?” Emily asked.
“I learned about it when I took a college course on the Italian Renaissance.” Spencer sheepishly smiled.
“Well, whatever it is, it seems like there is a story to be told––or rather to be heard.” JJ said as she stared at the crime scene photos, her eyebrows knitted together in bewilderment.
“That’s what we need to find out. Wheels up in 20.” Hotch called out.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The BAU members sat comfortably on the jet, each in their little world. That was until the unit chief called on everyone for a case discussion.
“Let’s go over victimology.” Hotch said to call on the group. Everyone moved closer to the unit chief to better discuss the case. Derek sat in an armchair, with Emily next to him. Across from them were Spencer and JJ. Hotch leaned against one of the seats, practically sitting on the adjustable arm of the plane seat. Rossi sat on the tan velvet couch, adjacent to JJ.
“Reid.” Hotch called on the genius of the group.
“White. Male. Between the ages of 45-55. Jobs ranging from a stockbroker to assets protection manager. All of them have cheated on their wives multiple times and some even had sexual harassment accusations.” The young curly-haired man said to start the discussion.
“Even if these men cheated on their wives and got those accusations, they still didn’t deserve the multiple stab wounds to meet their end.” Emily said.
JJ looked through the case file to see the reports on all five victims.
“The victims’ names are Igor Andreevich, Lucas Duncan, Hunter Mcevoy, Sam Winchester, Jared Kalinski.” JJ called the names out like it was a roll call.
“These are the five victims that this unsub killed so far?” Hotch asked. The blonde nodded her head and said “yes, sir” in response.
“As the victim count increased, the more stab wounds appeared on the body.” Rossi said to point out an observation.
“But the M.E. said that most of these stab wounds were created post mortem. Meaning that the initial stab was to get the job done efficiently and he went back in to fuel his rage and/or sexual needs.” Spencer
“Are we assuming his sexual orientation? Because there aren’t many homosexual serial killers, kid” Rossi said.
“It could be a possibility. We have to consider our options.” Hotch said.
Just then, the laptop turned on and showed the beautiful Penelope Garcia.
“How’s it going, my crime-fighting musketeers?” Penelope asked. Everyone, even Hotch, smiled at her cheery greeting.
“Garcia, start compiling files on each of our victims,” Hotch told the technical analyst. “Everything financial and personal. Bank statements, credit card bills, investments, wills, trust funds. Anything that will tell us more about the victim’s lives.”
“Faster than a Hotch rocket.” After that was said into the air, Penelope felt embarrassed while Hotch looked at her with his usual stone-cold face. Derek sighed and shook his head, taking a sip of his coffee to hide his second-hand embarrassment for his babygirl.
To break the silence, Rossi grunted and coughed into his fist.
“Based on the jobs these men had, we could safely assume that they were killed in the financial district of New York. Then, the unsub transported the bodies to a dumpsite.” Emily said as she read off from the case file in her hands.
“But why from Manhattan to Brooklyn? That is a lot of weight to carry.” Derek asked.
“Maybe Brooklyn holds a lot of significance to him. Something from his childhood and he can’t let go.” JJ said. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement as they all closed their files.
“Once we land, do you want me to get in contact with the media to inform the public?” The media liaison asked the unit chief.
“No. We need to hold back on it. Giving him the media’s attention is exactly what he wants. He wants his story to be heard and we will not give him that.” Hotch explained. JJ nodded in response and wrote down media concerns in her small blue notepad.
“Dave, You and Prentiss go to the crime scene,” Hotch instructed the group. “The rest of us will get up to speed at the precinct.” Everyone nodded in agreement with the unit chief.
After discussing the victimology and the nature of the case, everyone separated and occupied their own space on the jet. Derek on the couch, listening to music. Spencer by the window, reading the Hound of the Baskervilles. Rossi and Hotch in the back, conversing whatever two elderly men talk about.
The blonde media liaison stared out of the window until she felt a presence next to her. She looked away to find Emily standing in the aisle with a cup of coffee and a bag of Cheetos in her hands.
“Want some company?” Emily asked as she took the empty seat.
“I don’t mind at all.” JJ smiled at the brunette. The shorter woman felt special that Emily did this for her. She took the Cheetos and the coffee mug from her co-worker. As she grabbed them, their fingers brushed against each other. A little pink blush formed on JJ’s cheeks. Not wanting Emily to know about the silly crush the blonde had on her, JJ covered half her face with her beloved blue blanket. Emily chuckled at JJ’s actions and placed her hand on the blonde’s right shoulder, closing her eyes for a quick nap.
JJ carefully took some of her dark blue blanket and wrapped it around Emily’s right shoulder. She looked at the brunette who was sleeping on her shoulder and softly smiled.
The blonde took sips of the coffee as she stared out of the window. The sunlight bounced off the water particles in the clouds, creating a mini rainbow over the tops of the white clouds. The media liaison took in the silence as a treat, before landing into the chaos of New York.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
A government-mandated black SUV arrived at the 25th precinct. Everyone––sans Emily and Rossi––got out of the car and was greeted by a lively short woman.
“Detective Miller? We spoke on the phone.” JJ shook hands with the short woman.
“Please, call me Kennedy. Thanks for coming in.”
“No problem. These are agents Hotchner, Morgan, and Doctor Reid.” JJ introduced them while gesturing at the person, in respective order.
“Hey, why don't you go on inside and make yourself comfortable.” Kennedy said. The remaining BAU members nodded their heads and made their way inside the busy precinct. Police officers swarmed everywhere as the federal agents weaved their way to an empty conference room.
Everyone worked at a swift pace to get everything set up. JJ and Derek went with a police officer to get boxes filled with case files and other materials. Hotch talked with Detective Miller to get information on how her officers dealt with the unsub so far. While all this is happening, Spencer worked on the geographical profile, so the agents know where to look for the unsub.
“What do these tarot cards mean?” Hotch asked the group. Everyone shook their head “no”, signifying that they had no clue what each card meant.
“I’ll call Penelope and ask her about the meanings of the cards.” Derek said as he took out his flip phone to dial Penelope’s number.
“Live from Quantico, Virginia, it is the Divine Miss Penelope.” Penelope greeted the group.
“Hey, sugar mama. I need something from you.” Derek said.
“Talk to me.”
“I need you to interpret the meanings of the tarot cards that were left at the different crime scenes.”
“Ah- I’ll be your little witch today. Hit me with have you have.”
“Alright, I’m putting you on speaker.” Derek puts down the phone on the wooden table, so everyone could hear what the technical analyst has to say.
“Ten of Cups, Garcia.” Hotch said.
“When upright, the Ten of Cups embody happiness, joy, contentment, and emotional satisfaction in your family, relationship, or companion. It represents an idyllic state of comfort, harmony, peace, and love which makes you feel like you are in paradise. When reversed, it could mean shattered dreams, disharmony, or a broken family.” Penelope explained.
“Reversed Wheel of Fortune card.” Spencer called out.
“When the wheel is reversed, it means that luck has not been on your side and misfortunes have been following you. When it's associated with this card, you must understand that these are due to external influences that you cannot control.” Penelope said.
“Reversed Justice card.” Derek said next.
“A reversed Justice tarot card could indicate various things. One Justice reversal meaning is to show you are living in denial. You are not willing to accept the consequences of your actions or others. You are running from your guilt. You must, however, be aware that these are actions that are in the past. Other Justice reversal meanings could be injustice, retribution, dishonesty, corruption, dishonesty, unfairness, and avoiding accountability.” The technical analyst interpreted.
“Lastly, the reversed Emperor.” JJ said the final card they had.
“The Emperor reversed is a sign of abused authoritative power. In your social life, it can manifest in the overreach of power from a father figure or a possessive partner.” Penelope described the final tarot card.
With all the information in their heads, the BAU members felt puzzled about how to move forward.
“How are these cards related to the crime scenes?” Derek asked.
“It’s like a performance,” Penelope chimed in. Everyone turned their heads to listen to the cheery woman on the phone. “Like there is a story behind these killings. The cards are telling how the unsub is feeling. She wants us to know her story.” Everyone stood in shock when Penelope made a breakthrough in the case.
“Wait, Garcia. You said ‘she’. Why do you think it is a woman?” Hotch asked.
“Well, sir. The first victim was drowned, with no signs of sexual assault on his body. Doesn’t that usually indicate that the unsub is a woman?”
“Not necessarily but it is a quiet and efficient way of murdering someone.” Hotch explained.
“Female serial killers are a fascinating field. We don’t have much information on them. But what we do know involves throwing the riles completely out of the window,” Spencer started going on one of his rambles. “For example, female serial killers typically don’t leave a signature.”
“But this one leaves tarot cards at the scene.” Derek pointed out.
“Maybe it was what Garcia said: she’s telling us her story.” JJ said. “Alright. Let’s start from the beginning. What could be inferenced from her childhood?” Hotch asked.
“She could have had a domineering father who worked on Wall Street. And with that dynamic, he could have sexually and emotionally abused her, making her feeling like damaged goods.” Spencer explained the backstory of the unsub. “Also because the victims cheated on their wives, we could also conclude that the father also cheated on the mother, who always forgave her husband and tried to rationalize to stay for her daughter. And that made the unsub feel rage and being inferior. That she didn’t do anything to help her mother and herself.”
“But there is no indication of sexual gratification.” Hotch interjected.
“However, there’s a reason why there are so many lacerations on the later victims. It could be the rage from her abusive father that this unsub is using against the victims, who acted like surrogates.” Derek said.
“The stressor?” Hotch asked.
“To follow her father’s footsteps, she may have also worked in the financial field. As a stockbroker, a financial analyst, or even as a secretary for a company,” Spencer said. “And as she continued at her job, she had a bunch of little comments and slights against her”
“As for the trigger, maybe she got passed up for a promotion by a male co-worker who was less qualified than she was.” JJ explained.
“Any sane person would get miffed about it, but she’s built differently,” Derek said.
“So much so, she killed five men so far.” Hotch said.
“And she did it in an efficient manner where no one had any idea until now,” Derek said right after the unit chief. “But how did one woman kill five men in one borough and disposed of them in another?”
“She must know the area like the back of her hand. Brooklyn is what? Around 72 square miles?” JJ said in response to Derek.
“Uh, 69.5.” Spencer corrected JJ. The blonde sighed, not surprised that the boy genius would know the exact measurement.
“And the fact that no one has seen her either abduct or dispose of says she knows the city and its patterns well.” Derek said to continue what JJ had said before she was cut off by the boy genius. Just then, both Rossi and Emily had returned from the latest crime scene. In Emily’s hands were coffee cups on cardboard trays while Rossi had Chinese takeout. Everyone shared the food as they continued to work on the case. Being the little tease he was, Derek flung a wonton piece at Spencer, who was struggling to eat with the wooden chopsticks. The wonton piece gently hit Spencer’s forehead and the boy genius pouted, hiding his frustration at both the chopsticks and Derek.
“The M.E. said that the cuts were clean, no serrated edges. It would have to be a very sharp knife to be able to cut through human skin like nothing.” Emily said, to drive the discussion about the M.O.
“A knife like that could get the job done efficiently. Could be the work of a throwing knife. Take out the victim with a single throw to have them die quickly, then she stabs them to feel something.” Derek said.
“Throwing knives? What is she? A secret agent of the Dai Li?” Rossi joked sarcastically.
“From Avatar the Last Airbender?” Hotch retorted, remembering that his son Jack watches that show on Saturday mornings.
“What’s Avatar the Last Airbender?” Spencer asked. Nobody bothered to answer the young man’s question.
“But this one is different. It’s like the more she kills, the more anger builds up inside and it gets released on the victim when she goes back in.” JJ stated.
It became silent in the conference room, quite the opposite to the noise of the New York precinct in the evening rush hour. Tired from both traveling and working, Hotch could see that the rest of his team was also exhausted from the day. The unit chief called everyone to head to the hotel and rest, as they can always come back to the precinct tomorrow morning.
Slowly one by one, each of the agents packed their things and get out of the New York precinct, and hopped into the cars, praying the soft hotel beds would lull them into a deep slumber.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Day Three at the New York precinct. All the BAU members were getting irritated that they hadn’t proceeded much on the case. Derek tossed a small basketball up and down to pass the time. Spencer twirled a pen as he stared at the geographical profile, the gears turning in his mind. Both Hotch and Rossi were discussing the case quietly while JJ and Emily doodled on each others’ arms. The blonde was innocently drawing hearts and flowers until Emily came up with an idea. Feeling a tad mischievous, Emily took her sharpie marker and started to outline something on the media liaison’s left forearm. JJ raised an eyebrow, questioning what her co-worker was doing. As the image came together, JJ gasped softly, however, not surprised that Emily drew a vagina.
Emily quietly laughed as JJ, annoyed by the brunette’s actions, took her sharpie marker and tried her best to transform the vagina drawing into a flower. Taking her time, and with only a sharpie, JJ showed off her artistic talent by creating a masterpiece: a carnation blooming out of a vagina.
Emily rolled her eyes when JJ stuck out her tongue at the brunette. Taking Emily’s right arm, the media liaison started to outline a grid for a game of tic tac toe. The brunette started the game by marking an “x” in a spot and JJ took her turn. The two women continued their game of tic tac toe and
Everyone was silent in their own world until Hotch’s phone rang. The unit chief picked it up and it was a number he couldn’t recognize. Hotch silently motioned Derek to call Penelope to start triangulating the call’s location.
“Hotchner.”
“Hello, Aaron.” A sultry voice talked. On the other side of the call was the unsub, Taylor Evans.
“Seems you know my name.” Hotch asked.
“I researched you in preparation for this phone call,” Evans said. Through the phone receiver, Hotch could hear the soft whooshes of pages turning.
“You reading a book? What’s the title?”
“Le monde comme il va by Voltaire,” Taylor closed her book. “Have you read his work?”
“No, I haven’t. You seem highly educated.” Hotch stated.
“You seem to know a lot about me.” Taylor retorted.
“But I don’t know you that well since the start of this phone call.” Hotch responded.
“What would you like to know?” Taylor asked.
“May I know your name, for starters?” Hotch asked. A cold laugh could be heard through the landline speaker.
“Evans. Taylor Evans.” the unsub replied.
“Nice name,” Hotch complimented her to bring her guard down.
“Now that we are acquainted, you can ask me questions.” the unsub’s content sigh could be heard on the landline.
“Has life been hard on you?” Taylor asked, wanting to jump the gun.
“I try my best.”
“Try my best,” Taylor said mockingly. “Is that the best you can do for your family?” A sarcastic tone filled Taylor’s voice, not liking what the unit chief said in response to her question.
“With what I’ve got.” Hotch said.
“You got any children?” Taylor said to divert the conversation.
“I have a son.”
“How often do you see him?”
“I try to see him every week.”
“Do you see him every week?” Taylor tried to put Hotch under pressure, to get him to crack.
“No, I don't get there as often as I want.” A pitiful sigh was heard on the phone.
“I believe you, but don’t compare yourself to the men I see and work with. You are nothing like them. You’re just another whore.” Taylor said with such disgust in her tone.
“How am I a whore?” Hotch asked.
“You come when called on short notice. Begging to be put to work. Saving your reputation. However, even though you’re a workaholic, you make the time to see your son. You care for your son. You want the best for him.” Taylor explained.
“You’re right. I do want the best for him” Hotch said. The unsub sighed, wishing that she had a good man, like Hotch, for a father.
“Enough about you. What do you have to say about me?” Taylor asked the unit chief.
“You've been betrayed so many times, You don't know who to trust, And that's why that first murder felt so good. But each one since has been less and less satisfying.” Hotch explained.
“Good deductive reasoning,” Taylor said. “But how do you know if what I find provides me less satisfaction each time?”
“It’s a part of your nature. Until you hit a psychotic break and start devolving.” Hotch said.
“Hm. Want to find out, Agent Hotchner?” She hung up on him after that last sentence. Everyone in the conference room stayed silent in awe. The unsub injecting herself into the investigation surprised all the agents in the room.
“She contacted us,” Spencer said in astonishment, breaking the silence.
“She’s getting impatient. Have Garcia look up everything on Taylor Evans. We need to find if she lines up with the preliminary profile.” Hotch instructed Derek. The olive brown-skinned man did exactly what the unit chief said: call Penelope and extract as much information as possible on the potential unsub.
“Her use of the word whore is interesting,” Spencer quipped. “It suggests she's trying to disassociate herself from her actions.”
“But she's become more personal with the murders,” Emily said. “This doesn’t make sense. She is contradicting herself.”
After gathering the information, and debilitating on the facts, everyone came to the same conclusion: Taylor Evans was their unsub.
“Reid, tell Detective Miller that it’s time to deliver the profile.” Rossi said.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Every law enforcement officer occupied the main space of the precinct. All of the BAU members stood at one side, making it like a stage. JJ stood beside Emily, thinking to herself that she could have been this girl in a way. Both her and the unsub look eerily similar, maybe even mistaken for each other.
“We wanted to give out the profile as soon as possible. We’re looking for a white female, between the ages of 20 and 25,” Hotch said to start the profile. “Her name is Taylor Evans. Dirty blonde hair with grey eyes. She’s organized, methodical, and knows how to blend in with the crowd.”
“When this unsub kills, she does so mercilessly and without an ounce of pity. She also wants her victims to know they are going to die by her hand.” Rossi said.
“That’s why her preferred weapon of choice is throwing knives. They provide a clean cut. No mess required.” Emily said, slowly rocking on her heels.
“With her choice of weapon, she can be quick and efficient with her kills, as murder is her only goal,” Spencer paused to catch a breath. “But all the bottled-up rage gets released when she goes in for a second time, post mortem, and stabs the body multiple times.”
“It is a way for her to get sexual gratification. And revenge, from her years of being emotionally and sexually abused by her father,” Rossi said. “The victims fit the description of her father and they are surrogates for him.”
“She is also a textbook psychopath, exhibiting all of the classic traits: incapability of feeling any empathy towards others, neither guilt nor remorse, and claiming no responsibility for her actions. Like others of her type, she is highly intelligent, manipulative, and narcissistic.” Spencer explained the unsub’s pathology.
“Evans had received higher education. She graduated with a business degree, most likely a subconscious influence from her father. With the business acumen and the social skillset, this unsub can easily blend in with all the other business people and manipulate them.” Hotch explained, walked slowly around the large room.
“Based on her background, she came from a wealthy family. However, the family wasn’t perfect. Her father constantly cheated on his wife. The mother always forgave him. As a young girl, Evans most likely has experienced emotional and sexual abuse from her father. It was a way for him to control his daughter, and she had resented that for years.” Emily said about the unsub’s childhood.
“She mostly has experienced misogyny in her professional life. Had little comments and slights against her. Perhaps a less qualified male co-worker took a promotion that she deemed herself to be of a better fit,” Derek explained about the stressor. “Something in her work life triggered her to start killing the men who represented her father.”
“With this profile, we should search for Taylor Evans’ location and any potential victims. We suggest going public with the information as soon as possible… Thank you very much.” Hotch ended the profile with his parting words. Everyone at the precinct was disbursed from the room to get back to their work. The agents huddled together to prep themselves in case something big were to happen.
“JJ, I would like for you to conduct a press conference,” Hotch said.
“Why is that, sir?” The media liaison asked.
“I would like to draw her out. Have it known that we are after her.” The media liaison nodded her head in agreement and left the main room to work on getting a press conference together.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Before entering the press room, JJ took a deep breath and exhaled to calm herself down. Thoughts were rushing in her mind. Don’t let them get to you, JJ. She neatly fixed her hair to seem presentable. Taking her golden heart necklace, the media liaison kissed it for good luck.
The media liaison walked into the conference room with great confidence and stood behind the mahogany podium. Standing tall, JJ was not willing to lose a fight with the media, especially with a high-profile case.
“Ok, can I have everyone's attention,” JJ said to gather the media’s attention to her. “Please, if you could just take your seats…”
“There have been a series of murders that appeared in random locations around Brooklyn. There is sufficient evidence that the victims were murdered on Wall Street then transported to their disposal sites.”
“We believe she may have experienced a psychotic break recently, causing the unsub to escalate to murder to regain a sense of control. You should increase your patrols in and around Wall Street… “
“Why would you focus your profile on the finance guys when the unsub has also contacted members of the FBI?” A male reporter interrupted the media liaison.
JJ stood at the podium in shock. How could he know about that? We kept that under wraps.
“I- How did you obtain that information?” JJ asked.
“I overheard one of the cops saying it.” The journalist said casually. The blonde’s right eyebrow lightly twitched in anger. What couldn’t those cops just shut their mouths, JJ thought.
“What you heard from these officers isn’t true,” JJ lied to keep confidential information private. “Now, do you have any questions about the case?” A new wave of hands came up. JJ took a few more questions to answer. After a while, it was time to end the press conference.
“If anyone works in or around Wall Street, and sees anything unusual, please do not hesitate to call the number on your screen. Thank you.” JJ said her final statement, ending the press conference. As she walked down the steps down the small stage, a reporter called out her name.
“Agent Jareau! I have something that may be of interest for you!” A different male reporter called out. JJ turned to face him, excepting the same male reporter from earlier. Trying to keep her anger inside, she greeted the news reporter with dignity.
The male reporter handed the media liaison a letter. JJ took a look at it and was surprised at what she saw: the signature of their unsub.
“How did you get this?” JJ asked the man.
“It was sent to me yesterday, directly to the New York Herald.” The man said. JJ called for one of the officers by the wall to collect the letter for evidence.
“We are going to take this in for evidence processing. One of the officers here will take you in for some questioning.” The man nodded as another officer whisked him away for interrogation.
JJ sighed and went to search for the officer that unknowingly leaked information. She saw him with another cop, talking, against the wall outside of the press conference room.
“That information was not for the public!” JJ said, angrily at an NYPD officer.
“Listen, lady. I don’t know how and where he got the information from,” The beat cop explained himself. “He could have been creeping around the crime scenes or the precinct.
“Keep your mouth shut, pal, as this case is private and under federal jurisdiction.” JJ huffed as Derek grabbed her shoulders and slowly tried to drag her away. The blonde complied with her co-worker, not throwing a fight as this was not her battle to fight in.
Once Derek loosened his grips, the media liaison dashed out of the conference room to find her own space to calm down.
JJ speed-walked once she was out of the hallway’s vicinity. She rushed into the nearest bathroom. Breathing heavily, the media liaison slowly walked into one of the stalls and locked the door. Taking a deep breath, JJ prepared herself for the biggest scream she would take in her life.
“Fuck. These little shits. Those bastards. Assholes. Son of a bitch. Fucking shit. Why can’t they keep their mouths fucking shut! Those cocksucking motherfucking god damned jackasses!” JJ yelled at the top of her lungs. Her chest fell hard as the blonde was taking deep breaths. She felt better after taking out her anger by screaming. Feeling a little tired, JJ sat on the closed toilet and placed her head between her knees to calm herself down. A few minutes went by, and someone knocked on the bathroom door.
“JJ… Are you okay?” Emily’s voice could be heard on the other side. JJ sighed while getting up. She opened the stall door and tried to make herself more presentable. Unlocking the silver lock, she opened the door slowly to reveal a relieved Emily Prentiss.
“Ah–,” Emily gently grabbed JJ and brought her in a warm embrace. They stood together in that position for a few minutes before heading back to the conference room, where the others were, preparing themselves to capture the unsub tonight.
Later that evening, the BAU team, along with SWAT, raided a luxury apartment building in Downtown Brooklyn. Upon entering the only penthouse, Derek broke the door with his strength. The group of agents entered the area and in the middle of the living room, was Taylor Evans. Black mascara ran down her cheeks as she held a gun in her left hand and the final tarot card in the other.
“Just in time for the show, agents.” Evans croaked. Her sad grey eyes filled with tears, her cheeks flushed from her mental breakdown.
“Taylor… Listen. You’re young. You don’t have to do this. If you come with us, you can get a lighter sentence and live your life.” Emily said to calm down the broken girl.
More time passed by as Emily and Spencer tried their best to negotiate with the unsub, but the end was already written. Taylor Evans planned to do an end game, one where she put herself out of misery.
“I’m sorry….” the blonde girl whispered. In a swift motion, Taylor pulled the trigger onto herself and shot herself underneath the jaw. Her body dropped quickly but Derek ran up to the body to catch it.
“Damn it,” Derek said. “She was young. Broken. Felt like she had to prove herself that she was something.”
“There was nothing we could have done to help, Morgan. She already had planned her end. She was long gone before anyone else could have noticed.” Hotch responded to Derek’s little monologue.
Right next to her body was the Emperor card. A beautiful deep purple with gold lining depicting an emperor. The gold detailing reflected against the tall mirrors in the room. The card was reversed, like if she purposefully did that to tell the end to her story.

A Day In The Life
MASTERLIST
This daddy Spencer fic came to be by the thought of me wanting even MORE daddy Spence, so I thought why not write something where it’s just a typical day in his life with his family/the kids/pets? Thus, this was born. Just a heads up, this entire fic is told completely in Spencer’s point of view, just to give the utmost feels, which you should definitely experience in this.
Thank you to @teamkiall for giving me permission to use her real life pupper Hopper in this; he was so fun to write. Thank you to her for some of the phrases I used in this. Also, thank you to everyone who helped me pick which bunny to use as inspiration of Duke for, including: @reidsstudies, @andiebeaword, @lightinthedarkuniverse, @one-sweet-gubler, @nanocoool, @multifandommandy and the anons who all offered their input. I appreciate you all, greatly!
Finally, for a little insight on some of the bunny things I wrote about. For those who don’t know or aren’t as familiar with bunny behavior, I’ve linked a few Instagram posts for y’all to refer to when reading. It really helps when reading if you know what they look like.

“Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!”
Spencer’s eyes opened to not only the bright morning sun, but to a wide awake, hyper, three year old little girl.
“Yes, baby?” he groaned, rubbing his eyes.
His little girl Evie—born Evie Laine Reid—was currently jumping up and down on the bed at his feet. She flung herself on top of him and he over exaggerated his reaction, acting like she was the heaviest thing, making her giggle.
“What are you doing up so early?” he asked, pulling her into his arms.
“It nawt eawly.”
One glance at the clock and he realized it was after 8:30 a.m.
“Where’s your mommy?” Spencer asked, looking over at the empty space in bed where his wife, Y/N, usually occupied.
In her place though was their German Shepherd, Hopper. He laid his head next to Spencer’s hand and Spencer smiled, giving him some ear scratches.
Hopper was a giant teddy bear. At only two years old, he’d had enough trauma in his own life that made Spencer want to adopt him even more than he initially had. The poor canine had been severely mistreated and starved to the point his ribs had been showing when Spencer first laid eyes on him. After telling Y/N about the dog, they both decided to make their home his forever home. Despite having been through such hardships, he was such a happy and loving dog. It’s one of the things that Spencer loved about him most.
Patches of brown and white made up his fur color, although he was mostly brown. His face was a majority brown, a few lighter brown patches surrounding his eyes and an almost gray hued spot just about his nose. His ears were almost bigger than his head and as comical as it was, it made him even cuter than he already was—if that was even possible. He also loved his stuffed ducky, he made sure to take it to bed with him every night.
“I no no. I just wake up,” Evie answered his earlier question.
Hopper woofed softly and nosed Evie making her laugh and hug his neck.
“I wonder where Duke is,” Spencer asked, scanning the room to see if he was on the bedroom floor somewhere.
“Pwobably in fwont of da fwidge waiting for bweakfast,” Evie giggled.
Duke was their sassy, gray, 2 pounds of complete fluff, Netherland Dwarf rabbit. Yes, he had a bunny too. Spencer had never thought about owning a bunny before, until he met Duke.
He, too, was a rescue, like Hopper. After being abandoned in a park by his previous owner, he was rescued by a shelter who took amazing care of him until Spencer came along and fell in love with him. Now, he was a happy six year old bunny who looked incredibly grumpy on the outside but was actually a sweetheart. His favorite things—other than napping and eating—were hanging out on the back of the couch to “watch” TV with him and Y/N and flop next to them—or Hopper, who happened to be his best friend ever. He loved head pets, bananas and licking Spencer’s slippers. He was a cutie that you just couldn’t help but love.
One of his routine things was speeding to the kitchen every morning if he heard even the slightest indication that someone was up. He would sit in front of the fridge until someone fed him his daily breakfast of mixed leafy greens.
He had pellets twice a day, endless hay to munch on and treats every now and then, yet he acted like they never fed him. It was quite humorous.
Also, if you didn’t get him his breakfast in a timely fashion he made sure to let you know of his displeasure and thump.
Spencer hadn’t known as much about bunnies when Duke first came home with them and about had heart failure the first time he heard Duke thump. Turns out, thumping was just a bunny quite literally thumping their back feet against the floor, something they did to show their displeasure or when they’re startled or frightened. Most of the time now though, it was just because he wasn’t being fed fast enough.
Despite his demands, he was an essential part of Spencer’s family, just like Hopper was.
He took a quick glance at his phone to see if he had any missed messages and saw a text from Y/N letting him know that she’d gone to the store. He felt more at ease knowing she was just out running errands. It was always a treat to wake up next to Y/N every morning and he missed it when he wasn’t able to.
“Come on sweetheart, let’s get you some breakfast,” Spencer said getting out of bed, lifting Evie up in his arms.
His little girl wasn’t so little anymore. She was heavier to carry now a days and didn’t want to be carried as much anyways, so he always took advantage of all the times she let him.
He headed out of the bedroom with her, Hopper right behind him on his heels.
“What would you like to eat, baby?”
“Pincakes,” she said, causing him to laugh.
She still couldn’t say pancakes all that well and it came out sounding more like “pincakes”.
“Let’s go check on your brother and sister, okay? Unless mommy took them shopping with her.”
Spencer set Evie down in front of the nursery and she pushed the door open, running in. He tried to hurry and stop her in case they were still asleep, but they were already awake.
“MOWNIN BABIES!” Evie squealed happily.
Standing in their cribs, already wide awake were their ten month old twins, Aden James—Y/N’s name pick—and Isla Jade, his pick. The girls seemed to favor him more while Aden looked more like Y/N. All three had his curly, light brown hair and hazel eyes though.
“Good morning my sweet little babies,” Spencer cooed to them.
It wasn’t his first time being left with all three kids, five if you counted their fur children.
Spencer had been a stay at home dad ever since the twins were six months old. He’d loved his job as a profiler in the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit—still did actually—but after fifteen years in the field he had gotten burned out and burned out badly.
He didn’t technically resign, per se, but with the advisal from Emily Prentiss, his teammate, friend and boss, he decided to take a year long sabbatical. It was a decision that he didn’t take lightly either. He put a lot of thought into it and took his time making the decision. At the end of the day, he missed his family and wanted to spend more time with them.
Y/N was amazing and always understood his hectic, unreliable schedule and did a great job taking care of Evie, then the twins when they came along, while he was gone so much. But he knew it wasn’t fair to her or to their kids. He wanted to have the time to be with his family, be a good dad and be a good husband.
In the end, he knew work would always be there when he would be ready to return, a promise Emily had made him. For now though, he would often consult on cases his teammates were working on. At most, it only meant a few phone calls and some work time in his study, but never anything to take away from his relationship with his kids and Y/N. In fact, he was enjoying it much more than he ever thought he would.
It was nice, too. Y/N worked from home with a flexible job that allowed her to work whenever she could. As a mother of three, it was incredibly helpful. It also helped to have more family time, as well.
He’d become quite the super dad. Taking care of three kids three and under wasn’t easy by any means, but he’d had plenty of practice lately. He also had a newfound respect for Y/N, doing this all on her own. But for now, he knew he could handle the three of them while she was out grocery shopping.
“I bet you guys are hungry,” Spencer said, picking up Aden first as his crib was the closest to the door.
He picked up Isla in the other arm, trying to step around Hopper who was always people’s shadow. He rarely never followed a person somewhere and had to always know what was going on. With the kids and Hopper in tow, it looked like he had his own little tourist group.
Isla babbled, trying to reach down and touch Hopper’s head and he licked her hand happily. He and Duke both loved the kids as much as they loved them.
“Lead the way ladybug,” he told Evie, following her out of the nursery and down the stairs.
True to her prediction, Duke sat in front of the refrigerator door, as if waiting for the refrigerator god to open it up and sprinkle out some parsley and spinach leaves for him.
“Morning, Duke,” Spencer chuckled.
The tiny eared, grumpy faced bunny stared him from the place he sat, looking like he was judging him for sleeping in late. He most likely was.
“Just let me get the kiddos situated and I’ll feed you guys,” he told his furry friends.
Spencer sat Aden and Isla in their high chairs and sat Evie on her favorite stool at the counter. Hopper was the more patient of the two, so Spencer went to the fridge first. The second it opened, Duke started hopping around his feet in excitement, standing on hind legs to see if he could help himself to a breakfast buffet.
Combining a salad of spinach, romaine, parsley and cilantro, he sat the plate in front of an excited Duke and went about fetching Hopper’s food. It wasn’t even a full minute before he heard Duke chowing down on his breakfast, his munching quite audible.
Spencer filled Hopper’s bowl with his allotted amount of dog food and refilled his water bowl, giving him a pat on the back as he enjoyed his food.
Before starting the pancakes, he poured some puff cereal on each twins’ tray to let them eat while he cooked. To be twins, it was amazing to see how they differed—other than being fraternal twins.
Aden loved the strawberry flavored puffs, which Isla hated. She much preferred the sweet potato or the banana ones.
Aden was definitely more laid back and calm whereas his sister was loud and boisterous, something she definitely inherited from her older sister. On the other hand, Aden loved to be more independent and Isla loved just cuddling and staying close to him or Y/N.
“Daddy can I have chocowate chip pancakes?” Evie asked.
He had grabbed her a juice box from the fridge in the process of getting everyone, humans and animals alike, settled. She now sat, happily sipping on it.
“Is there anything better?” he grinned.
“Nope,” she shook her head emphatically.
He’d gotten the batter mixed up and was about to pour it on the sizzling griddle when he heard Evie calling him again.
“Mhm?” he answered, without looking.
“Isla twyin to put a puff in Aden’s ear.”
Spencer spun around just in time to see Aden pulling on Isla’s hair. Apparently he pulled hard enough to cause her to break into tears.
Things like this were just mild considering most days were even more hectic than this.
“Hey, hey. We don’t pull hair,” he scolded Aden, giving him a toy to play with.
He picked up a puff, putting it to Isla’s lips and she calmed down, eating it. They were still just grumpy from waking up and hungry, not actually upset.
“No putting puffs in your brother’s ear either, Isla,” he told her.
She grinned real big like she was proud of herself. He smiled. It was hard to be mad at any of these cute little faces.
Half an hour later after serving Isla and Aden their plain, torn into bite size pancakes, fixing Evie her chocolate chip pancake—with banana slices for a smile and chocolate chip eyes—and dealing with a ecstatic Duke who smelled the banana the instant Spencer unpeeled it, he had finally got to sit down with his own breakfast. He grabbed one more slice of banana, feeding it to Duke before stroking his head.
“That’s all you’re getting, little guy,” he chuckled.
He’d just taken a bite when the back door opened. Isla kicked her legs happily and Aden squealed as they spotted mommy first.
“Mommy!” Evie squealed, “Daddy made pancakes!”
Y/N walked in with her hands filled with grocery bags. Spencer shot up, immediately moving to help her.
“Hey baby,” he smiled, kissing her lips as he took most of the bags.
“Hey,” she smiled, setting down the bags she had left in her hands, “I thought I smelled pancakes before I walked in.”
“Chocowate chip too!” Evie piped in.
“Some of daddy’s best pancakes huh, Evie Bear?” Y/N smiled, kissing her cheek as she passed by her.
“Hey there, twinkies,” she said, calling the twins their popular nickname.
She smoothed a hand over each head of hair and kissed the top of both. Isla kept on happily eating and Aden handed her a bit of uneaten pancake which she took from him, eating.
“Thank you Aden,” she chuckled, “Good pancakes, Spence.”
“Want a plate?” he asked.
“Yes, but sit and eat. I’ll get them. You deserve a break for staying here with them,” she said, grabbing a plate out of the cabinet.
“I’m surprised you didn’t take the rugrats with you,” he commented, taking another bite of his breakfast.
“I would’ve, but it’s so much easier to grocery shop when there aren’t three extra sets of hands reaching out of the shopping cart to grab everything.”
“Touché.”
It wasn’t easy shopping alone with three kids. He attempted it once and it was a disaster. Now, either Y/N went alone or they tackled it both together with the kids, as a team.
She fixed her plate and sat next to Spencer at the island, pulling Aden’s and Isla’s high chairs closer to her. Spencer pulled her into his side and kissed her head, just enjoying having her near him along with their kids.
“So what’s on the agenda for today?” Spencer asked.
“Well I do need to get a little work done and clean some and take care of our little circus troop here,” she chuckled, motioning to the kids.
As if to prove her point, Aden started screaming when he dropped his sippy cup. Without even missing a beat between bites, she leaned down and picked it up, handing it back to him.
“How about I keep them entertained and watch them so you can get some work done,” he offered.
“Spence, you don’t have to do that. Aren’t you needed for a conference call with the team later?” she asked.
“Yes, but I can easily pop on Netflix for the kids and just step into the kitchen. Easy as pie.”
“Whatever you say, super dad,” she smiled, “But thank you. I owe you.”
“I’ll add it to your tab,” he winked.
He could think of a few things he’d like to ask for.
After breakfast, his little tribe moved from the kitchen to the living room.
He set Evie up with some toys, a coloring book and colored pencils while he changed the diapers.
“Ew stinky!” Evie complained, putting a hand over her nose.
Spencer laughed, amused at his toddler. Of course, being through this twice—now with double the diapers—he was pretty used to the smell. He was pretty sure dirty diapers were worse than things he’d smelled as an FBI Agent though.
“I know, Princess, but unlike you they’re not big enough to use the potty, so me and mommy have to change their diapers.”
“Cause dey too tiny dey would fall in.”
She said it was such a straight face that it was hard for Spencer not to laugh. The minds of children always amazed him, how they put things together, how they understood things, how they saw things. It provided endless amusement, especially with Evie.
“That and they aren’t a big girl and boy like you’re a big girl.”
She smiled big before going back to coloring. Hopper laid curled up next to her. Duke, finished with his breakfast, was zooming around the room, binkying.
Aden and Isla giggled and babbled watching the hyper bunny as they tried to reach for him as they impatiently laid and wriggled while getting their diaper changed.
Eventually after tiring himself out, he flopped near Aden, who reached out to touch him.
“Be gentle,” Spencer cautioned.
It was something they’d been raising Evie to do, both with Duke and Hopper. Evie was getting better about it, but still could be a little rough. They made sure that Aden and Isla would be raised the same.
Spencer took hold of his son’s hand, helping him gently stroke Duke’s head. In return, Duke gave Aden’s hand a little kiss, licking it.
Finally finished with diaper changes, he set them on the floor to play. They were crawling everywhere by this stage, staying active and wanting to be held less and less. It was bittersweet to Spencer because the period of infancy was so short lived. Although, secretly he hoped to have another kid or two, maybe a few more. Although that was a conversation with Y/N to save for another day.
In addition to crawling, they were in the pulling up stage. They’d figured out how to grab onto things and pull themselves up. They also liked to try and knock things off tables, like it was a game.
Which is what they were currently doing.
They stood side by side, holding onto the coffee table for balance and knocking off magazines.
“Guys, no no,” Spencer said, picking the magazines up and putting them out of their reach.
He knew better than to try and put them back on the coffee table. They’d knock them off repeatedly until they were bored of it, which wouldn’t be for quite a while.
They dropped to the floor, back to crawling around and getting into things they probably shouldn’t. Aden remained happy with one of his toys and chewed on it, while Isla babbled as she crawled.
“Da da da da.”
“That’s my name,” he chuckled, trying to tidy up the messy living room just a bit.
Living with three kids often meant toys scattered all over the place. He figured trying to straighten up would save Y/N from having to do too much of it later.
“Stop it! You wuining it!”
He looked over to see Isla pushing more of Evie’s crayons on the floor, giggling like she was proud of herself. Evie on the other hand, was furious and near tears.
“Iwa stop!” she shouted.
“Isla, come here baby.”
He picked up his youngest daughter, pouring out some blocks for her to play with and setting her in front of them. He turned back to Evie who was crying now.
“Daddy she WUIN it.”
“I know, I’m sorry sweetie, come here.”
He held out his arms and she fell into them, crying out of frustration and anger.
“Iwa meanie.”
“Baby girl,” he soothed, picking her up and setting her on his lap so she could face him, “She didn’t do it on purpose.”
Evie sniffled, but didn’t say anything.
“She and Aden are only babies, Evie bug. They still don’t completely realize that they’re doing something wrong or upsetting you, they think it’s a game. In her tiny mind she probably thought she was playing with you. Besides, I can help you pick up your crayons and put them back the way you want them. Alright?”
She nodded a bit.
“Are you still mad at Isla?”
“No,” she shook her head.
“Good, I’m glad,” Spencer kissed her head, “You’re a wonderful big sister.”
“I am?”
Evie looked up into Spencer’s face, her tears now drying on her cheeks and excitement in her eyes.
“The best,” he emphasized, “How about since you’ve been such a great big sister lately, we bake some cupcakes when they take a nap later? And maybe we can play tea party if you’d like.”
Evie was now grinning big and nodded, clearly thrilled about the idea.
“There’s that pretty smile,” Spencer grinned, chucking her under the chin, “Will you go give your sissy a hug then?”
“Otay.”
She wiggled down out of Spencer’s lap and went over to Isla, who was tossing blocks around in an attempt to play with them.
Evie put her arms around Isla’s tiny body and hugged her, kissing her cheek.
“Love you, Iwa.”
Spencer smiled, his heart warming at the scene.
“That’s my sweet girls.”
It was amazing. Spencer had turned his back for a second and he’d already lost track of one of his kids.
“Did you see where Aden went, Evie?” Spencer asked, after rushing back from the kitchen with no luck.
“Nope.”
She hadn’t even looked away from the tv, so he was certain she hadn’t seen where he’d gone.
He couldn’t have gotten far, but it was truly incredible how fast these tots were when they were on the move.
“Aden? Where are you buddy?”
“Looking for this little duckling?”
Spencer whirled around, seeing Y/N walking in, Aden in her arms, chewing on the toy in his hands.
“Oh thank god,” he sighed, relieved, “Where was he?”
“He came crawling into your study,” she chuckled.
“I’m so sorry, babe. I swear I turned my back for a minute and he was gone.”
“Believe me I know; sneaky little things aren’t they? Don’t worry, I needed the baby break anyway.”
She tickled his cheek slightly making him grin.
“Have you gotten much work done?” Spencer asked, sitting down on the couch, pulling Y/N down with him.
“Yeah. I can finish up later anyway.”
“Daddy, can we bake now?” Evie asked with hopeful eyes.
“Baking?” Y/N raised a brow.
“I told her when the twins went down for a nap, me and her could make something special. Maybe we can even make it a surprise for you,” Spencer grinned secretively, “How about it Eves?”
“Yes!”
She was up and racing to the kitchen in a flash. Spencer had stood, ready to follow her.
“Don’t worry, I can take these two in the study with me until their nap time,” she chuckled, “Just don’t make a mess!” she called after him.
“Never.”
Okay, so, the kitchen was a bit of a mess.
“Daddy, I cwacked da egg!”
“You sure did. High five!”
Spencer held up his hand and her small one high fived him as she grinned big.
Evie had picked out a funfetti cake mix for her choice of cupcakes and was currently helping crack the eggs into the mix.
There was some dry cake mix spilled on the counter. Empty egg shells were scattered on it as well in the midst of the chaos of the cupcake ingredients, baking cups, electric mixer and pan.
“Okay, this is the last egg. Think you can crack it?”
“Yesh,” she nodded, taking the egg carefully, a serious look on her face.
She tapped it gently against the bowl and cracked it open like a pro. Spencer couldn’t be more proud.
It was moments like this that made him less sad about her no longer being a baby. At this age he and Y/N could do more things with her that they couldn’t when she was a baby, like this. It was always fun to include her in little tasks nowadays. It made him excited to be able to incorporate Aden and Isla when they got older.
“Now I’ll mix it up with the electric mixer. Stand back, okay?”
She nodded again, stepping a bit further away on her little stool, hands holding onto the edge of the counter as he mixed the cake batter together.
“You think that looks good enough?” he asked, letting her see into the bowl.
“Mhm.”
“Alright. Daddy’s going to pour them into the pan and then bake them.”
“Then we eat dem?”
“No, they have to cool and then we get to frost them.”
Her face fell, disappointed.
“But how about while they bake and cool we have a tea party? You can go set it up while I get these in the oven and I’ll be right there.”
“Alwight!”
She hopped off her stool and dashed out of the kitchen faster than the cartoon roadrunner, making him laugh. What a character she was.
Keeping to his word, he got the cupcakes in the oven and headed up to Evie’s room.
“Otay daddy, you wear dis.”
Evie handed him a silver toy tiara and a pink feather boa.
“You be my guest.”
“Sounds good,” he grinned, putting the items on and waiting for further instructions.
“Otay you can’t sit ‘til I say so.”
“Yes ma’am.”
She put out some of her toy, plastic food on the tea party plates and pretended to fix some tea.
“Tea sewved,” she grinned.
It was impossible for him to sit in the tiny chairs, so he sat on the floor next to the table. He picked up the tea cup, pinky out and all.
“May I drink?” he asked, politely.
“Yesh, you may,” she grinned, reaching her cup over to clink it with his.
He took a pretend sip and gave her a grin.
“Excellent tea, my dear.”
They continued playing for a while longer until she started getting sleepy. Spencer knew it was past her nap time.
He was laying her down in her bed when Y/N found him an hour later. Poor thing had been quite literally falling asleep in the middle of the tea party.
“Now that’s a nice look,” she giggled.
He looked at her, confused for a moment before he realized he still had the boa and tiara on. He grinned, pulling them off and laying them down in her room before pulling her door closed as he walked out.
“I took your cupcakes out of the oven half an hour ago,” she said.
“Dammit I forgot about them! Well that just ruined the surprise.”
“I’ll act surprised then when you present them to me,” she grinned, “I thought we could frost them while the kiddos are napping.”
“Twinkies are already down for their nap?” he asked.
“Yup. They wore themselves out crawling after Duke.”
“That poor bunny,” he chuckled.
“Hey it keeps him fit. I think Hopper was thrilled it wasn’t him for once.”
Once they were in the kitchen, Spencer wrapped his arms around her, pulling her towards him.
“Who knew the house could be so quiet?” he smirked, kissing her nose.
“It is a breath of fresh air,” she smiled.
“How about instead of frosting the cupcakes we frost something else?” he grinned, “I mean I already have my own knife.”
She burst out laughing, causing him to laugh as well.
“What?” he asked, grinning.
“Spence, you’re supposed to be a genius. I’m sure you can come up with a better euphemism for sex than that.”
“I was just rolling with it,” he grinned, pulling her close to kiss her temple, “How about it though?”
She sighed, sounding defeated.
“You know I’d love to, but I need to groom Duke after we finish these cupcakes. It’s shedding season, you know.”
She frowned, seemingly upset to let him down.
“It’s okay baby,” he smiled, hugging her, “Come on. We’ve got cupcakes to decorate.”
They were halfway through with the cupcakes when Spencer’s phone rang.
“Hey, Luke. What’s up?”
“Hey Reid, you busy?”
“Not really, just frosting Y/N’s cupcakes.”
There was a pause.
“Is that some sort of euphemism for sex? Cause I can call back later.”
Spencer couldn’t help it, he barked out a laugh.
“No, I mean we’re just decorating some cupcakes.”
Y/N gave him a quizzical look and he gave her a lopsided grin, mentally reminding himself to share that with her later. She’d think it’s hilarious.
“Oh good cause we need your genius insight, Reid,” Luke said.
“Sure, one sec.”
He lowered the phone to his shoulder.
“The team needs me to consult on a current case, I’m sorry, do you mind?”
“Go,” she shooed him, “I’ve got this. Don’t worry.”
“You’re the best, Y/N,” he murmured, pecking her lips.
“Don’t I know it?” she smirked, turning back to the sugary explosion on the counter as he walked towards his study.
“Okay, what’s up?” Spencer asked, as he settled into the desk chair.
“Alright. So we have three murders in Seattle…”
By the time Spencer had finished bouncing around ideas with the team, it was after 1 pm.
Walking into the kitchen, he saw all three kids had woken from their naps and was just finishing up their lunches of grilled cheese—bite sized grilled cheese pieces for Aden and Isla though.
Spencer stole one of Evie’s chips as he passed her.
“Hey! Dat nawt vewy nice!” she frowned.
His lips turned up in a smile as he apologized and kissed her head.
“How’d it go? Were you able to help any?” Y/N asked.
She held up a bite of grilled cheese to Aden’s mouth to get him to eat. He seemed to have more interest in playing with his food than actually eating it though.
“Help wiff what?” Evie asked, ever as curious as a typical toddler was.
“Daddy got a call from your aunties and uncles at the BAU. They needed his help with a case,” Y/N explained.
“And you didn’t let me talk to dem?” she pouted, “I miss auntie JJ and auntie Penewope. Auntie Emawee, Uncle Dave and evwyone else I can’t tink of.”
She had actually sat there and counted off all of the names on each finger, amusing Spencer to no end. He knew he was a bit biased, but she was the cutest.
“You were still napping, baby, I’m sorry,” he said, “Next time I’ll make sure you get to talk to them.”
That seemed to appease her and she went back to eating her lunch.
Oh the joys of being a child with no concerns in the world.
-
After lunch, Spencer took the kids outside and they were soon joined by Y/N, Hopper and Duke. It was such a beautiful day that they had to take advantage of it.
Duke was set up in a good sized space to run and explore, but with a collapsible fence around him, just to keep him safe and from running away. Y/N was still hesitant to take it away just yet, even though so far he did great at staying near them when outside. He loved it, nibbling on the grass and flopping in it. He clearly was living his best life.
Hopper just about sprinted out the door when Y/N let him out. He, too, loved the backyard. He had about worn paths in the grass because he loved his specific running routine. He barked happily as he sped around.
Evie immediately ran to their playground and started climbing the “rock wall” portion of it. Not surprising to Spencer though; from the moment she could stand she had climbed into and over stuff as a baby, practically always giving him and Y/N heart failure.
“You two want to go down the slide?” he asked, carrying the twins toward the play set.
Aden started fussing, reaching for Y/N.
“Ma ma! Ma ma!”
“I will take that as a no,” Spencer said, handing him over to Y/N.
“He’s been fussy since they woke up. I think he’s cutting another tooth,” she frowned.
“Aww, my poor little man. No wonder he doesn’t want to play.”
Spencer rubbed his back as Aden laid his head on Y/N’s shoulder.
“Growing teeth isn’t fun, is it buddy?”
Y/N smiled, cuddling him close.
“Go on and play with the girls, me and Aden will chill on the patio and cuddle.”
“So do you want to slide, Isla?”
She responded in baby talk, babbling away.
“Is that so? Tell me more.”
She continued to babble as he set her at the top of the slide, one hand on her stomach and the other on her back to keep her safe.
“I’d like to see you get on the slide, Spence!” Y/N called from the patio, laughing.
He shook his head.
“Never again!” he hollered back.
He once tried getting on the slide of this same play set with Evie in his lap, when she was younger. It was a disaster to the point that Y/N about had to call the fire department to get him unstuck...after she spent ten minutes laughing.
He’d learned his lesson from that.
Isla squealed as he slowly slid her down the slide. He picked her up, holding her in the air above him.
“You did it, baby!”
She squealed with laughter, grinning big. When he brought her back down, she held onto him trying to give him a kiss with her mouth wide open.
“Thank you; you’re extremely sweet, Isla,” Spencer cooed.
“Daddy, watch me!”
Spencer looked over and watched as Evie slide down the slide on her belly.
“Careful, Princess.”
“I am! Did you see me?”
“I did,” he said, “I’m impressed.”
She ran over to the swings next. The amount of energy this child had was outstanding. He couldn’t remember a time when he’d had this much energy.
“Push me pwease?”
“Okay, honey.”
He put Isla in the baby swing, which she happened to love and buckled her in, starting to swing her a bit as he pushed Evie.
The peals of laughter that met his ears filled his heart with joy. He watched the wind blowing his little girls’ curls as they both swung, happy as could be.
His eyes panned out over the yard; Hopper still running around, Duke munching on some grass and his wife rocking his little boy on a rocking chair on the patio.
It was moments like this that he treasured the most.
They spent nearly all afternoon outside, although the twins and fur children had meandered inside after an hour or so both hot and worn out.
Spencer stayed outside though spending time with Evie. He always tried his hardest to make sure she knew how much he and Y/N loved her.
After the twins were born, life became more hectic and she entered a new permanent part of life where she’d have to share her parents. He made extra efforts in spending some time alone with her, Y/N did too, just so she wouldn’t feel left out or any less important than her younger siblings.
He spent time jumping on the trampoline with her, watching her do tricks. He then pushed her on the swing until his arms hurt, but it was totally worth it to see the glee on her face.
They laid in the grass, listening to birds chirp and looked at clouds. She claimed to see one cloud in the shape of the doughnut and he pointed out one he thought looked like a penguin.
They were both hot and sweaty after staying outdoors for so long, so he turned on the sprinklers and let her run through them. Of course, Hopper ended up joining them, sprinting like he had springs attached to his paws as he jumped through the spraying water.
Spencer couldn’t resist joining in, chasing after Evie. The water felt cool and refreshing on flushed, hot and sweaty skin.
“I’m gonna catch you!” he teasingly called.
She squealed, trying to run faster through the water.
“No you nawt daddy!”
He reached down and picked her up, swinging her around. He wished he could keep his babies this small forever.
By the time they were tired of playing in the sprinklers, their clothes were soaked through.
“Mommy’s gonna kill me for letting you get so soaked,” he chuckled.
“No she nawt. She love you. When a mommy love a daddy dey hug. She just hug you.”
He couldn’t argue with her logic.
“Come on munchkin, I bet mommy is wondering what happened to us.”
He walked behind her as she sprinted into the house. He was surprised to see it was nearly 5 o’clock.
“You two must’ve had fun,” Y/N chuckled, eyeing their clothes.
“That we did. Where’s thing 1 and thing 2?”
She pointed to the pack and play in the corner of the kitchen where the two were happily playing with one another.
“Thought I’d stick them in there so I could keep an eye on them while I started their dinner,” she said.
“Let me go change Evie and get some dry clothes for myself and I can help,” he offered.
“I’ve got it covered. I’m making chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese for them since it will soon be bath and b-e-d time.”
He nodded understandingly. They’d been having trouble getting Evie to bed lately. She always wanted to play when it was time for bed, so they’d gotten a routine down. Dinner, bath, story time and cuddle and then time for lights out. So far, it had been working.
“Do me a favor and turn on the tv please? I promised Evie she could watch cartoons before dinner.”
“Sure thing,” Spencer agreed.
He gave her a side hug on his way past her and maybe a slap on the ass too.
“Spencer!” she shrieked, exasperated.
He just laughed, sending her a wink over his shoulder.
-
He settled in with Evie on the couch and the twins playing on the floor. He held Aden up, helping him practice walking as Evie watched cartoons.
“There ya go buddy! You guys will get this in no time.”
Spencer sat him back on his bottom and Aden turned around, fussing, trying to climb in his lap. Even in his lap, he started crying.
“Brudder too loud,” Evie frowned.
“I know, honey, I’m sorry. He doesn’t feel good.”
Spencer rubbed his back, rocking him a bit, desperately trying to calm his son. He clung to Spencer’s shirt, crying at the top of his lungs, moving his face back and forth from the inability to get comfortable.
Spencer frowned, standing, bouncing him a bit. Y/N came into the living room a moment later, a small tube in her hand.
“He won’t stop crying, no matter what I’ve tried,” Spencer frowned, hurting for his own miserable child.
“I got some teething gel. Let me see your finger.”
He held his finger out and she squeezed some of the clear gel on his finger. Opening Aden’s mouth just enough, he rubbed it gently on the sensitive gums.
He went to pull his finger back but Aden kept a hold of it, gnawing on it.
“Good luck getting that finger back,” Y/N smirked, “I’ve had that happen way too many times.”
So that’s how he sat until Y/N had finished the kids’ dinner; next to Evie, Aden in his lap and his finger in Aden’s mouth. Luckily, Isla seemed occupied enough and didn’t feel the need to be clingy. It was like they’d switched personalities for the day.
“Evie, go wash your hands for dinner please,” Spencer told her.
She obeyed, heading off to her bathroom. In the last year, she’d really gotten to enjoy washing her hands. She thought of it as making her a big girl, which it did. She had a stool in front of her bathroom counter that she’d stand on, get some soap out of the fish decorated soap dispenser and wash her hands, proud to be able to do this big girl task now.
She came into the kitchen just as he was helping Y/N get the little ones into their high chairs.
“My hands all cwean!” she announced, holding them out as to prove her point.
“Good job, pumpkin,” Y/N said, giving her a kiss as she lifted her to set her on the island stool.
“What for dinna?” she asked, trying to peek at the fixed plates on the counter.
“Your favorite, chicken nuggets and mac and cheese,” Y/N smiled, setting her kid plate in front of her and a fork.
Evie’s eyes lit up and she immediately dug in.
“I snuck some broccoli in it for the twins,” she told Spencer, not worried if Evie heard.
They must have been blessed with an easy first child because Evie was always good with eating her vegetables and she loved when mommy fixed her veggie mac, as she called it. Y/N had tried multiple different vegetables in it from spinach to broccoli and even kale once, with positive results. Spencer was definitely impressed.
But where it was easy with Evie, it had been a bit more challenging with Aden and Isla. Aden was more open to trying new things, but didn’t seem to like as many veggies as Evie had at that age. Isla, on the other hand, flat out refused.
So Y/N had resorted to sneaking some veggies in with their food. Sometimes it was in their macaroni and cheese other times it was mixed in with sauces, easy things they could eat. It had been a struggle, but they seemed to finally start liking the flavor.
The sight of food caused a ruckus with the two as they babbled and shrieked, ready to eat. Y/N sat the small bowls in front of them, along with the cut up chicken nuggets spread on their tray. Hands immediately dug in the nuggets and they tried to feed themselves with their spoons.
The twins eating was always an interesting time. One baby eating was messy enough; times that by two and it was even worse. Thankfully, bath time was after dinner.
Spencer had had his back turned as he fed Duke and Hopper their dinners and when he turned around he swore his two youngest were already covered in mac and cheese.
“Two seconds into dinner and they’re already covered in cheese sauce,” he shook his head, amazed.
“It’s your turn to do baths tonight too, big boy,” she chuckled, patting his chest as she walked by to put something in the dishwasher.
On her way back, he pulled her back to him, hugging her from behind. She didn’t complain though. He loved all the stolen hugs and kisses they shared even during the most chaotic of days.
He tipped her face up to his and kissed her gently, wishing he could convey just how much love and appreciation he felt for her in the simple, soft kiss.
“Ew daddyyy,” Evie whined, covering her eyes, “I twyna eat!”
He pulled away from Y/N and they both laughed, both amused by their toddler’s outburst.
“Listen to her, she sounds like a teenager already,” Spencer said.
“Just wait ten more years when she actually is,” Y/N commented.
“Evie Bear, are you gonna be my little girl forever?” he asked.
She shot him a grin big enough to compete with his own toothy smile.
“Always.”
Bath time almost always followed dinner in the Reid household.
Before the twins, it was easy just to bathe Evie and get her ready for bed. Now, it was three times the baths and three times the pajamas.
They tackled it as a team, though. They’d switch off between bath duty and pajama duty. Tonight, Spencer would bathe the kids while Y/N got pajamas ready, fixed the twins’ bedtime bottles and most likely tried to clean the kitchen in between.
He’d left Evie in his and Y/N’s bed to play on her kid iPad—way better than those actual iPads if you asked him—to keep her entertained while he gave Aden and Isla a bath. Their bedtime was obviously a little earlier than Evie’s so they were the logical first bath of the night.
All three of his children were fish. They loved water, so bath time was always a hit.
They both sat in the water, splashing and talking to one another in their own little baby language. They played with their toys: little bath alphabet and numbers, colorful boats, a rubber ducky, even little toy cups.
Spencer washed their hair as they played happily.
Aden baby talked, handing him a cup.
“Is this for me? Did you make me a drink?”
He pretended to drink it, handing the cup back to him.
“That was very good, little man.”
Aden smiled, reaching for another toy, putting it in his mouth to chew on. Spencer took the moment of stillness to carefully rinse the baby shampoo out of his hair. His baby soft curls hung in wet, wavy tendrils, similar to Spencer’s own hair when it was wet.
He repeated the same process with Isla as she was content to play with the boats, pushing them around in the soapy water.
“You two are like little ducks aren’t you? You could stay in here until you’re wrinkled and pruny and still wouldn’t get out,” he said.
They look up at him, serious looks on their faces.
“You wanna know a secret? You may be little ducks but you’re my baby ducks,” he smiled, leaning over to give each one of them kisses.
They were too busy playing to really care, but Spencer didn’t mind. One day, they wouldn’t want kisses all the time like they did now and he would cherish every second he could, of this part of his life.
The typical babbling ensued, including the normal da da’s.
“Da da da da,” one would start, encouraging the other to join in like it was a battle who could say it more.
“Daddy loves his babies,” Spencer smiled.
He finished rinsing the soap off their bodies, giving their faces one last wipe over with the washcloth—much to their dismay—and lifted them from the tub, laying them on the towel by his side.
He wrapped them tight in the towel, keeping them warm and carried them to Y/N to get ready for bed.
-
Bath time with a toddler was definitely a different experience than bath time with infants.
Evie was a little chatterbox. Something she got from him, undoubtedly. He always enjoyed when he had bath duty, it was special time with his little ducklings.
Evie had a few bath toys that were especially for her since they were a bit too old for the twins at this point. She loved her bath crayons and creating masterpieces on the bathtub walls. She also had a little toy that made bubbles. It was endearing to see her face light up when Spencer made the bubbles appear.
“Daddy, look at dis,” she pointed to her latest drawing.
“I see. What did you draw?”
“Dat Hopper,” she pointed to one blob of red.
“And dat Duke.”
Duke was a blue blob.
“I love it,” he chuckled, “I think they would too.”
“Can we pwactice da afabet?” she asked.
Evie’s bath time recently had become a sort of learning time to practice her letters and numbers. It had started with Spencer writing a letter or two on the side of the tub with her bath crayon and letting her name it. It had become so fun for her she ended up asking to do it more often now.
“Sure, sweetie.”
He took a green crayon and wrote the letter “A” on the wall in front of her.
“Do you know what this letter is?”
“A!”
Next to it, he wrote a “B”.
“B,” Evie said, confidently.
Another letter was written next to it.
“C.”
They did this throughout the whole alphabet, until the wall was covered with letters. She’d only stumbled on a few, but she was getting better all the time. The swell of pride he felt in his chest was never ending as he constantly discovered just how smart his babies were growing up to be.
“Let’s try something a bit different, okay?”
“Otay.”
He took a different color—red this time—and wrote her name. Using the crayon as a pointer, he pointed to the “E”.
“Do you know which letter this is?”
“Dats E!”
“That’s right. What about this one?” he asked, moving the crayon to the next letter.
“Um,” she paused, taking a little longer on this one, “V.”
“Correct,” he smiled, “And this next one?”
“I.”
“And then we have this final one. I’m sure you know this by now,” he grinned.
“Dat E again!”
“Yes, that’s right! Do you know what that spells?”
“No,” she shook her head.
He didn’t expect her to, but it was all part of his little lesson.
“That is your name. E-v-i-e. Evie,” he smiled, “You just spelled your name.”
She smiled brightly, then looked like she was thinking about something.
“Daddy? Why I named Evie?”
“Well,” he said, returning to rinsing her long hair, “Your mommy wanted to name you Evangeline at first.”
Evie scrunched her nose up at that, making him snicker. She really did look just like him when she did that.
“I know, I didn’t like that name much either,” Spencer said, “But she really wanted to name her first daughter that because it was her grandmother’s name and she was really close to her before she passed away. I thought that was a sweet gesture to honor her in that way, so I tried to compromise with her.”
“What’s compwomise?” she asked.
“It’s where two people both get what they want by deciding on something that they both like. For example like your name. Mommy liked Evangeline and I didn’t. A common nickname for it is Evie and we both liked that name so we settled on that. We both chose a name we loved for you and mommy got to honor her grandma that way.”
“Oh,” she nodded, seemingly deep in thought, processing what he had just said, “I like Evie betta anyway.”
“So do I, my little Evie bear. Now come on, let’s get you out of this bath before mommy thinks you were washed down the drain.”
It was probably half an hour after their bedtime and all three kids were still awake, in their jammies on mommy and daddy’s bed.
Spencer figured he’d let them stay up a little later so Y/N could finish her housework. Bedtime was also another team effort, at least when it came to Aden and Isla. It was hard to hold two babies with bottles—even though they could now hold their own bottles— and a book at the same time, even for the most experienced parents. So one of them would hold one twin, the other would have the other and read them both a bedtime story. It was a system that had been working well for them, so they stuck to it.
Also, he kinda hoped the later bedtime would slip by Y/N’s attention unnoticed. No such luck, though.
Needless to say though, she was a bit exasperated to find them still up almost thirty minutes later than normal.
“Spencer Reid, I swear to God if my children don’t go to sleep, I won’t have sex with you until they move out of the house.”
Thankfully, Evie seemed too preoccupied with her iPad to notice Y/N’s statement. All they needed was her repeating that.
“Sorry, babe. I thought I’d let you catch up on your housework before we tucked them in.”
“You should’ve come get me, I didn’t even know it had gotten so late,” she said apologetically, “Besides they need their sleep so their brains can grow to be as big as yours.”
“Actually, the brain doesn’t grow. It stays the same size from the moment you’re born. As you learn, your brain makes new neuron connections.”
She chuckled, walking over to pick up Isla off the bed.
“You know what I meant, brainiac,” she teased, “I got their bottles in the nursery so if you can grab Aden and a book, we can get them to bed.”
He nodded, picking up Aden.
“You stay there and play on your iPad, okay baby girl?” Y/N said, “We’ll be back to tuck you in after we get the babies down.”
“Otay mommy.”
Spencer got situated in one of the two rocking chairs in the nursery, Y/N settling in beside him. Bottles were in the twins’ mouths and the twins were each nestled in a set of arms as Spencer opened the book of the night, Bedtime For Baby Star.
He was familiar with this story. His best friend JJ had given them a copy when he and Y/N first got pregnant with Evie. It was a story she’d read many times to her sons Michael and Henry. He and Y/N had read it many times to Evie—and still did—and now they read it to their twins. It was as if this adorable little story had been passed down through many bedtimes of many different kids.
“Once there was a baby star,” Spencer began, gently rocking in the chair.
“He lived up near the sun. And every night at bedtime, that baby star wanted to have some fun. He would shine and shine and fall and shoot and twinkle, oh, so bright.”
Isla cooed as she ate, eyes locked on Spencer and his voice. Aden looked around, but would turn his sight back to Spencer every little bit to make sure he was still there.
“And he said “Mommy, I’ll run away if you make me say good night.”,” Spencer read.
Isla’s feet shuffled back and forth against Y/N’s lap as she ate. Usually, they didn’t fall asleep during a nighttime story, but Spencer loved the routine of it and being able to have some bonding time, so it soon became a nightly thing for him and Y/N.
Aden pulled back from his bottle, taking a break from eating and looking around the room. Spencer glanced down to check on him before continuing reading, seeing Aden put the bottle back in his mouth on his own.
“And then his mommy kissed him on his sparkly nose and said, “No matter where you go, no matter where you are, no matter how big you grow, and even if you stray far, I’ll love you forever, ‘cause you’ll always be my baby star.” The end.”
Spencer closed the book quietly, setting it aside and dimming the lights. This, too, they had found worked best when getting the babies to sleep. They usually sat and rocked them in the dimmed nursery as they finished their bottles and fell asleep.
Looking down at Aden, he could tell that the little guy wasn’t far off from sleep.
As they both sat and rocked the babes quietly, he reached over with his spare hand to the rocking chair Y/N was in. He took her hand and held it in his the entire time until their two youngest were sound asleep.
“Why don’t you go order us some dinner and I’ll get Evie to sleep,” Spencer suggested after they’d tiptoed out of the nursery.
“It’s been a long day and I know you probably don’t feel like cooking a separate dinner.”
“Okay, I’ll go order us a pizza. The usual?” she asked.
“Pepperoni, yes please,” he grinned, kissing her cheek.
“Tell her night and an “I love you” from me,” she called as she headed down the stairs.
Evie was exactly where they’d left her earlier. She was still sitting against their pillows, playing her game.
“Come on rugrat,” he grinned, picking her up off the bed, “Let’s go choose a story to read.”
He carried her down the hall towards her room, setting her down once they were inside. He took her toy iPad and set it aside with her other toys as she kneeled in front of her book corner, deciding on a book.
“Find anything yet, Eves?”
“Yesh,” she pulled one out, walking back to her bed and climbing onto it then holding out the book for him to see.
“Five Little Bunnies?” he asked, taking it when she nodded.
“No,” she took it back, “I read to you daddy.”
He smiled, pulling her into his lap.
“You gonna read to me tonight then?”
“Yesh,” she nodded, her drying, loose curls shaking with her movement.
She opened the book to the first page.
“Once upon time dere five widdle bunnies.”
She turned the page and continued.
“Da fiwst widdle bunny liked to hop and play outside.”
Spencer’s brows raised, surprised that she wasn’t actually making something up, but quoting the book. He knew she wasn’t actually reading, but it still pleased him enough to know that she’d memorized the book to be able to read it to him. He held her close, resting his chin on her head as she continued “reading” to him.
“Da fifth widdle bunny didn’t want to be weft out of all da fun and hopped off to join all his fwends. De end.”
She closed the book, craning her neck to see Spencer.
“You nawt asleep are you daddy?”
“No baby,” he chuckled, picking her up and setting her against her pillows.
“Did you remember the entire story so you could read it to me?” he asked.
She slid under the covers and he pulled them up over her as she nodded excitedly.
“Did you wike it?”
The hopeful excitement in her eyes just about melted his heart. He had loved kids for as long as he could remember, but there was nothing sweeter than your own children.
“I loved it.”
He handed her the stuffed animal koala—named Pookie—that she always slept with and she cuddled him in her arms. Spencer smoothed her hair back from her face and kissed her forehead, making sure the covers were high enough so she wouldn’t get too chilly.
“Next time though, it’s my turn to read to you,” he laughed.
“Otay,” she smiled.
“Mommy says goodnight and she loves you,” Spencer said, turning on her nightlight for her, “Goodnight Evie, I love you.”
“I love you too, daddy.”
As Spencer turned off the lights, the last thing he saw was Evie turn on her side and close her eyes, heading quickly into a peaceful slumber.
“I’ve never been so happy to see food. Or the couch,” Spencer said, flopping onto the couch, a slice of pepperoni pizza in his hand.
Hopper was curled up on the couch, his head partially laying on Spencer’s leg, fast asleep. Duke loafed next to Y/N’s legs, relaxing, himself. They acted so tired, they made it seem like they had been the ones doing the parenting all day.
“Duke I hardly recognize you after your grooming,” Spencer chuckled, reaching over her lap to run his free hand over the soft fur.
“I swear he lost half a pound in fur alone,” Y/N commented.
It was just past 8 pm and the two of them finally were able to sit down to rest and eat their dinner.
“I tried one of your cupcakes,” Y/N said after finishing her final piece of pizza, “They’re great.”
“Oh really? When did you do that?”
“Around lunch. It technically was my lunch.”
“Our rugrats sure keep us on the move, don’t they?” Spencer grinned.
“And to think you want more,” Y/N half groaned.
“I do,” he said seriously, “But not right now. One day. When they’re a little older.”
“Good because right now I’m too tired to even think about sex.”
“You and me both,” Spencer sighed, wrapping his arm around her.
“How do parents manage to do this and have a sex life?” she mumbled causing him to snort.
“I don’t know, but I’m sure they take it one day at a time. Besides, I have plenty of time to show you just how much I love and appreciate you in that way, when we aren’t so tired.”
There was obviously more to their marriage than just the sexual part of it. Just making time for each other like this, even when it was at the end of the day, was more than enough. They were a team. They’d do marriage, parenthood and life together. It was all he needed right now.
Some day, they would find a balance. But right now, life was still hectic and intimacy wasn’t always guaranteed. One great thing though was that intimacy came in all forms.
This time right now, was an example. It was a private, cozy and relaxing atmosphere for just the two of them to spend some time together.
“I’ll be there,” she smiled, laying her head against his chest.
“So will I.”
Spencer was tired, but he was also extremely happy,
They turned on the tv for a little while, not paying much attention to the show that was on since they both could hardly keep their eyes open. They dozed like that for a little while, arms wrapped around one another.
They knew one twin or the other would likely wake up at least a time or two during the night, but right now even catching a few winks was better than none.
They’d make it to bed eventually, where they’d fall into a deep sleep next to one another, preparing for a new day when they’d do this all over again.
